Does Sunscreen Under Makeup Cause Skin to Be Oilier?

Does Sunscreen Under Makeup Cause Skin to Be Oilier?

This can happen if you use a sunscreen that is too rich or greasy for your skin type. Heavy cream-based formulas or sunscreens with thick occlusive ingredients may feel sticky and make oily skin appear shinier, especially when layered under makeup.

For oily skin, look for lightweight sunscreens labeled oil-free, gel-based, fluid, or water-based. These formulas absorb quickly, feel less greasy, and help control shine throughout the day. Matte-finish and non-comedogenic sunscreens are also good options, as they are designed to reduce excess oil and prevent pore clogging, making them easier to wear under foundation or powder.

How one's skin reacts to sunscreen cannot be predicted, whether it gets oilier or just feels right. The key is really just trial and error; trying out different sunscreens and finding the one that fits your skin best.

How to Choose a Sunscreen for Oily Skin – Buying Guide

It can be challenging to find sunscreens if you have oily skin. However, it is possible to find the right product for you. Below, we list the top things to remember when choosing sunscreen for oily skin.

1

For Daily Use: Get A Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen With at Least SPF 30

For Daily Use: Get A Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen With at Least SPF 30

Sunscreens help protect the skin from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. When a product is labeled broad-spectrum, it means it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and contribute to premature aging, while UVB rays are mainly responsible for sunburn and skin damage.

For daily use, dermatologists generally recommend choosing at least SPF 30, which blocks about 97% of UVB rays. However, if you spend long periods outdoors, SPF 50 or higher can provide added protection. Regardless of SPF level, sunscreen should still be reapplied every two hours, especially after sweating or washing your face.

Dr. Katrina Habaluyas Luz

When it comes to choosing the right sunscreen, aside from the formulation or texture, make sure that it gets a check in these non-negotiable areas:

  • Broad-spectrum - meaning it protects against both UVB and UVA
  • SPF of at least 30 - SPF measures protection against erythema (or redness) after exposure to the sun. Now, you would need AT LEAST an SPF 30 as this would filter ~97% of UVB rays. If you can get one with SPF 50, even better, as it can filter ~98% of UVB rays.
  • Water-resistant

2

Take a Look at the Label - Pay Attention to the Ingredients List

Ingredients matter a lot when it comes to skincare, and the same goes for sunscreen. Paying attention to the ingredients can help you determine whether the sunscreen is oily-skin-friendly or not.

Look for Ingredients With Oil-Control Properties

Look for Ingredients With Oil-Control Properties

If you have oily skin, look for ingredients that help control excess sebum to prevent a greasy appearance throughout the day. Ingredients like niacinamide and salicylic acid can help regulate oil production and keep pores clear. Silica is another helpful ingredient, as it absorbs excess oil and helps create a more matte finish on the skin.

You can also look for sunscreens that contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. These mineral filters not only protect the skin from harmful UV rays but can also help control excess oil and reduce shine, making them suitable for oily skin types.

Dr. Katrina Habaluyas Luz

Niacinamide is an excellent ingredient for people with oily skin. It helps regulate your skin’s oil production while protecting your skin barrier. On the other hand, salicylic acid helps reduce excess oil, unclog pores, and prevent blackheads.

Avoid Heavy Oils and Petrolatum-Based Products to Prevent Clogged Pores and Breakouts

Avoid Heavy Oils and Petrolatum-Based Products to Prevent Clogged Pores and Breakouts

If you have oily skin, Dr. Katrina advises avoiding emollients, heavy oils, and petrolatum-based ingredients whenever possible. These ingredients can leave a thick film on the skin, which may trap excess oil and increase the likelihood of clogged pores and breakouts.

Instead, look for sunscreens labeled non-comedogenic, as these are formulated to minimize pore blockage. They usually have lighter textures that absorb more easily, making them more comfortable for oily skin while helping reduce shine throughout the day.

3

For a Lightweight and Non-Sticky Sunscreen, Choose a Gel- or Water-Based Formula

For a Lightweight and Non-Sticky Sunscreen, Choose a Gel- or Water-Based Formula

For oily skin, choosing a sunscreen with a lightweight texture is important to prevent a greasy or sticky feel. Gel- and water-based sunscreens are good options because they absorb quickly, feel light on the skin, and often leave a more matte finish. These formulas are less likely to clog pores, making them comfortable for daily use.

It’s also helpful to look for oil-free sunscreens, which are specifically designed to minimize shine and keep the skin looking fresh throughout the day. In terms of UV filters, chemical sunscreens usually have thinner and more sheer textures that layer well under makeup. Mineral sunscreens, on the other hand, may feel thicker but can be a better option for sensitive or acne-prone skin.

Dr. Katrina Habaluyas Luz
Dermatologist, Educator, and Digital Creator
Dr. Katrina Habaluyas Luz

In general, gel-based sunscreens make a good option for people with oily skin because they're oil-free. Gel sunscreens are more lightweight and don't leave that sticky feeling.

I highly recommend getting a trial size to test it out for a couple of days as you go through your day-to-day activities. Only then will you be able to decide whether it works for your skin or not.

Is there a difference between sunscreen for the face vs. sunscreen for the body? Typically, the active ingredients in both sunscreens are the same. In general, sunscreens for the face are more lightweight and easier to rub into your skin. But if you only have one sunscreen on hand, then please don't hesitate to use that face sunscreen on your body or vice versa!

4

If You Can, Look for a Sunscreen With a Matte Finish

If You Can, Look for a Sunscreen With a Matte Finish

Most sunscreens in the market have a dewy finish, which can make you look greasier. However, there are new formulations now that come with a matte finish, which can cater to oily-skinned individuals. You can look for ingredients like zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, and dimethicone as these contribute to the mattifying effect of the sunscreen.

Dr. Katrina Habaluyas Luz

Zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are ingredients that can be found on mineral sunscreens. These are generally less irritating, so they are good for those with sensitive skin too!

Frequently Asked Questions Answered By Dr. Katrina Luz

We know that having oily skin is already very dyahe. So to help you even further, Dr. Katrina answers some of the most asked questions of people with oily skin and their sunscreen woes.

Should You Re-Apply Sunscreen More Often if You Have Oily Skin?

You should apply and reapply sunscreen as per usual - which is every 2-3 hours, regardless of your skin type.

This makes up for the possible inadequate application of sunscreen the first time around and also provides coverage for sunscreen that may have been wiped off or removed by sweating.

Is It Okay to Skip Moisturizer and Just Use Sunscreen if You Have Oily Skin?

Yes, this is acceptable. Most sunscreens, in fact, have hydrating and/or moisturizing ingredients that can be enough.

How to Re-apply Sunscreen Properly, Especially for Those With Oily Skin?

Ideally, for those with oily skin, washing your face before reapplication tends to be the most comfortable.

However, this may not always be the case, so you can adapt based on the circumstances - blot your skin with blotting paper or pat dry with tissue prior to application.

Should You Avoid Ingredients Such as Oxybenzone and Octinoxate

The regulation of sunscreens is tricky because it varies per region or country.

Have you heard of the term 'GRASE'? It is a term proposed by the FDA which stands for “generally recognized as safe and effective". The 2 ingredients that are considered GRASE are titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. While, the FDA proposes two ingredients are not GRASE namely: PABA and tolamine salicylate.

In general, the FDA is calling for more safety data on 12 ingredients before determining whether they be classified as GRASE, including octinoxate and oxybenzone. While the FDA is reviewing data, it does not say that the ingredients are unsafe neither does it ask the public to stop using sunscreens that contain any of these ingredients.
