Anessa Perfect UV Sunscreen Skincare Gel SPF 50+ Review for the Philippines: Pros and Cons After Testing

UVB rays affect the surface of the skin (epidermis) and can cause redness and dark spots after sun exposure, which is why proper sun protection is important. A sunscreen’s ability to block UVB is indicated by its SPF rating (ranging from 2 to 50+). In general, the higher the number, the stronger the protection against sunburn.

In our tests, we measured this product’s SPF performance five times using a spectrophotometer. The average equivalent SPF value was 577.24, supporting its labeled SPF 50+ claim.

Among all the products we compared at the time of writing, only three exceeded an equivalent SPF of 50, while ten recorded SPF values of 10 or below. Sunscreen gels are often said to offer weaker protection, and several products in our comparison struggled to deliver strong protection. In contrast, this gel delivered one of the highest levels of UVB protection. It’s a reliable option for protecting your skin during extended time outdoors under strong sunlight.

In addition to UVB, there are UVA rays, which can pass through windows and affect the skin even indoors. UVA penetrates deeper into the skin (dermis) and is associated with concerns like wrinkles, sagging, and skin darkening. A sunscreen’s ability to block UVA is indicated by its PA rating, shown as ++ to ++++, with more plus signs representing stronger protection.

In our tests, Anessa's sunscreen recorded one of the highest equivalent PA values among all items compared. Based on five spectrophotometer measurements, the average equivalent PA value was 18.13, significantly higher than the overall product average of 4.24. These results support its labeled PA++++ level of protection.

Aside from strong UV protection, this sunscreen is formulated to help minimize irritation during daily use. When our team reviewed the ingredients, they noted the presence of dipotassium glycyrrhizate, which is known for its skin-soothing properties and may help reduce irritation.

That said, it contains one UV scattering agent along with three types of UV absorbers. While this helps provide strong UV protection, it may not be ideal for every skin type. If you’ve experienced irritation from sunscreen before, it’s best to do a patch test before applying it fully.

Still, compared to other products we tested—some of which didn’t include any soothing ingredients—this formula shows consideration for sensitive skin. For those with normal skin, it should be comfortable enough for everyday use.

Contrary to some online reviews that claim it feels “very sticky,” we did not find the stickiness particularly strong after application. In five tests, we pressed artificial skin coated with the sunscreen against a container filled with beads. On average, only 4 out of 20 beads adhered.

While it’s not completely non-sticky, most people who regularly use sunscreen are unlikely to find it uncomfortable.

For comparison, some products in our test had more than 10 beads stick to the surface. Compared to those, this sunscreen shows noticeably less stickiness. It should also work well as a makeup base.

When testers tried the product, most did not notice any significant drying or tightness after application. The gel spreads easily, and more than half of the testers said it felt comfortable on the skin. Some even described a slightly moist, smooth sensation. Overall, the texture was rated positively, supporting the brand’s claim that it helps protect against dryness-related damage.

However, not everyone had the same experience. A few testers reported a slight lack of moisture after application. Compared to other products in our test that felt comfortable across different skin types, this one may feel mildly tight on dry skin. If you have dry skin, applying proper skincare beforehand is recommended.

The tube is made of a soft material, making it easy to dispense the product with minimal pressure. Unlike some products we tested that released more product than expected when squeezed, this one allows better control. Testers appreciated the narrow nozzle, saying it made it easier to dispense just the right amount. This helps reduce product waste.

The tube is on the bigger side. Compared to some slimmer, more compact options in our test, this one may take up more space in your bag. If you want to take it on the go, consider carrying it with a larger bag.

The brand describes the fragrance as fruity floral, and testers described it as a noticeably citrus scent during use.

However, opinions were divided. Some testers said the scent was uplifting, while others felt it smelled artificial or overly sweet.

Although it has a fresh, summery vibe, several testers commented that the fragrance felt somewhat synthetic and fairly strong. Those who prefer more natural or subtle scents may not find it ideal. In line with some online reviews describing it as “strong,” the scent does linger after application. If you’re sensitive to fragrance, you may want to consider a scent-free option.

One downside is that the product can transfer onto clothing. In our test, five minutes after applying the sunscreen to artificial skin, we placed black fabric on top and applied friction using a 200 g weight five times. Color transfer was observed in three out of five trials.

To be fair, all products we tested showed some level of transfer. Still, this sunscreen requires mild caution, especially when wearing dark clothing. It’s best to apply it before getting dressed and allow it to fully dry before putting on black or dark-colored outfits.
