  1. Fast read and write speeds (over 1000MB/s in testing), suitable for large file transfers
  2. IP65-rated water and dust resistance for added durability
  3. Drop-tested up to 2 meters, making it reliable for travel and daily use
  4. Compact and lightweight design (56.1g), easy to carry anywhere
  5. Works with Windows, macOS, PS4, PS5, and USB Type-C Android devices
  6. Includes both USB Type-C cable and USB Type-A adapter for wider compatibility
  7. Consistent real-world performance for photos, videos, and game data

Potential Cons:

  1. Premium price compared to entry-level portable SSDs

The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD V2 is a strong choice for people who need a reliable external SSD for everyday use, especially if you’re often on the go. While most comparable products we tested do not offer water and dust resistance, this model features an IP65 rating for added protection. It has also undergone the brand’s proprietary drop testing, so it can withstand drops from up to 2 meters with minimal risk of data loss.

Despite its durability, the device remains compact, slightly smaller and thinner than a smartphone, and lightweight at just 56.1g. There’s also a built-in loop for attaching a strap, making it easy to carry in your bag or bring along during travel.

Its data transfer performance is equally impressive. It recorded read speeds of 1055.84MB/s and write speeds of 1028.24MB/s, placing it among the fastest portable SSDs in our comparison. Around half of the competing models, including those from Buffalo, fell below 900MB/s for both read and write speeds. It even exceeded the brand’s claimed speeds of 1,050MB/s read and 1,000MB/s write, effectively disproving claims that “transfer speeds are only around 650MB/s.”

In real-world testing, it transferred a 5GB set of photos and videos in 2.5 seconds and a 16.6GB 3D game file in 39.71 seconds, both faster than the overall average of the tested products. While it didn’t quite match Kingston’s faster results, it still delivered quick and consistent performance. Contrary to some user feedback, large file transfers do not feel slow or frustrating in everyday use.

It also stands out for its wide compatibility. It works with both Windows and macOS, and can be used with PS4 and PS5 consoles, making it a practical option for gamers. It’s also compatible with Android devices that support USB Type-C. The inclusion of both a USB Type-C cable and a USB Type-A adapter is a practical bonus for different devices.

With its compact size and fast transfer speeds, this portable SSD is well-suited for backing up laptop files, storing large photos and videos, or saving game data. It’s a reliable and fast external SSD worth considering for daily use.

Aside from the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD V2, there are other similarly designed portable SSDs in the lineup. Here’s a quick breakdown of how they compare, so you can decide which one best fits your needs.

SanDisk Portable SSD:

  1. Comes with a rubber hook at the top for easy carrying
  2. Offers read speeds of up to 800MB/s
  3. More budget-friendly option
  4. Available in 1TB and 2TB
  5. Backed by a 3-year warranty

SanDisk Extreme PRO Portable SSD:

Top 5 Pros of SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD V2

Top 5 Pros of SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD V2

After testing the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD V2 and comparing it to 16 other portable external SSDs, we found that it offers five key advantages. We’ll go through each one in detail, so if you’re considering buying it, be sure to check them out.

Top-Level Benchmark Performance With Minimal Waiting Time for Data Transfers

Top-Level Benchmark Performance With Minimal Waiting Time for Data Transfers

Benchmark scores, one of the most important factors when choosing a portable SSD, are highly impressive for this model. In theory, it can transfer large files of over 50GB in under a minute. For everyday use, this means shorter waiting times and a smoother overall experience.

Using the benchmarking tool CrystalDiskMark, we measured the SEQ1M Q8T1 read and write speeds three times and calculated the average. The results showed read speeds of 1055.84MB/s and write speeds of 1028.24MB/s. These figures clearly exceed the brand’s advertised speeds of 1,050MB/s read and 1,000MB/s write, and effectively dismiss claims that “transfer speeds are only around 650MB/s.”

It also holds up well against higher-end competitors. Kingston recorded read speeds of 1058.71MB/s and write speeds of 969.14MB/s, putting this model at a comparable level. Meanwhile, about half of the other products we tested, including those from Buffalo, delivered read and write speeds in the 280–900MB/s range. If fast data transfer is a priority, this SSD is a reliable and high-performing option.

Strong Real-World Transfer Speeds for Photos, Videos, and Game Data

Strong Real-World Transfer Speeds for Photos, Videos, and Game Data

Real-world transfer speeds are also highly impressive, making this SSD a practical option for storing photos, videos, and even game data.

In testing, transferring a 5GB set of photos and videos from a desktop PC took just 2.5 seconds. The average across all tested products was 2.91 seconds, with some taking as long as 7.33 seconds (as of the time of writing). For larger files, transferring a 16.6GB 3D game took 39.71 seconds, compared to an average of 50.12 seconds among competing models.

While it didn’t quite match Kingston’s faster results of 1.87 seconds for 5GB files and 25.53 seconds for 16.6GB game data, the performance is still more than fast enough for everyday use. Contrary to some user feedback, large file transfers do not feel slow, and waiting times are minimal in real-world scenarios.

Slim and Compact for Easy Portability

Slim and Compact for Easy Portability

Its portability is another standout feature. The device measures approximately 53 × 101 × 10mm, making it slim and slightly smaller than a typical smartphone. Its compact size makes it easy to carry alongside your phone, tablet, or laptop.

It’s also lightweight at just 56.1g on its own, or 67.2g when including the cable. Compared to other models we tested, some of which weighed between 100g and 131g, this one feels noticeably lighter for its size. There’s also a built-in loop at the top, allowing you to attach a strap and carry it more conveniently on the go.

Works With Windows and macOS; Includes USB Type-C and Type-A Cables for Flexible Use

Another advantage is its wide compatibility with different devices. It supports Windows (10, 8.1, and 7) as well as iOS and macOS, making it a practical option for users who need to connect to multiple devices at home, at work, or on the go. It’s also compatible with PS4 and PS5, so it works well for storing game data.

For Android users, it can be used with smartphones that support USB Type-C. It also comes with both a USB Type-C cable and a USB Type-A adapter, making it easier to connect to a wide range of devices without needing extra accessories.

While it does not support recording functions, only one product we tested (from Buffalo) offered this feature. Unless you specifically need recording capability, this won’t be a major drawback for most users.

IP65 Water and Dust Resistance for Protection Outdoors

With an IP65 rating for water and dust resistance, this SSD is well-suited for users who need to carry it outdoors. Around 80% of the products we tested did not offer any water or dust protection, making this model a more reliable option in different environments, regardless of weather or location.

It has also undergone the brand’s internal drop testing and is designed to protect data even if dropped from heights of up to 2 meters. This reduces the risk of data loss from accidental drops, giving added peace of mind during everyday use.

One Potential Drawback of the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD V2

While the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD V2 has many strong points, it may have a potential drawback. If you’re considering buying it, it’s worth checking both sides carefully before making your decision.

Not Officially Supported on ChromeOS

Not Officially Supported on ChromeOS

While the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD V2 delivers strong overall performance, it has not been officially confirmed to work with ChromeOS. However, this isn’t a major disadvantage compared to other models, as most of the products we tested also do not support Chrome OS or even iOS and iPadOS.

That said, if you’re using an iOS, iPadOS, or ChromeOS device, it’s best to carefully consider compatibility before purchasing.
