What Makes Korean Sunscreens Special?

What Makes Korean Sunscreens Special?

We all know that sunscreen is essential in one's skincare routine. It goes beyond skin-deepーsun exposure causes skin damage and increases our risk of cancer. There are definitely hundreds of sunscreens out there, but what makes Korean sunscreens special?

When it comes to skincare, Koreans are what we'd consider "extra." A 10-step daily skincare routine is pretty much standard for them. So it makes sense that their sunscreens are also extra! Korean sunscreens are much more lightweight than their Western counterparts. There's none of that sticky, heavy feeling that you get from Western sunscreen brands.

Despite being lightweight, they actually have higher SPF content than Western brands. As if that isn't enough value for your money yet, they also contain nourishing ingredients that go the extra mile. They can address skin concerns like oiliness, illumination, dryness, and uneven skin tones

Dr. Meg Sison
DermatologistDr. Meg Sison

Korean sunscreens are a hit among consumers because people prefer cosmetically elegant sunscreens that are easier to blend and are great to use for the hot, humid weather in the Philippines. In addition, these sunscreens also incorporate skincare ingredients that soothe the skin and provide additional benefits such as Centella Asiatica and niacinamide.

How to Choose a Korean Sunscreen – Buying Guide

Sunscreens can differ depending on your preference. Before buying one, you have to consider different factors, like what suits your skin type and lifestyle. To learn more about these factors, read our buying guide below.
1

Choose According to Your Skin Type

As with any other skincare product, it is important to start with your skin type. Any sunscreen might indeed be effective in protecting you from sun exposure but wreak havoc on your skin if it’s not compatible with your skin type.

A Hydrating Sunscreen Is Best for Dry Skin

A Hydrating Sunscreen Is Best for Dry Skin

If you struggle with dry skin, your best bet to stay hydrated under the sun is to look for sunscreen with moisturizing properties. Korean sunscreens designed for dry skin frequently use nourishing and soothing ingredients like bamboo water, aloe vera extract, and niacinamide.

There are many other ingredients that various brands use, but the common denominator is their ability to provide hydration and their antioxidant properties. The best Korean sunscreens for dry skin are able to combine this hydrating power with a lightweight formula so that you feel hydrated but not malagkit.

Dr. Meg Sison
DermatologistDr. Meg Sison

Bamboo water contains flavonoids, glycosides, and phenolic acids. They also have antibacterial, antiinflammatory, antimelanogenic, and antioxidative properties. Aloe vera extracts are also soothing, and they also have antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.

Niacinamide can aid in repairing the skin barrier, and it also has antioxidant properties as well. Other hydrating ingredients to look for in sunscreens are ceramides, squalane, glycerin, natural moisturizing factors, to name a few.

For Oily Skin, Opt for a Sunscreen With Oil Control Properties

For Oily Skin, Opt for a Sunscreen With Oil Control Properties

Oily skin can be tricky to take care of. The instinct is to avoid moisturizing products, but that can actually make oily skin more problematic. If you have oily skin, you also need hydration so that your oil glands won’t overproduce oil to compensate. At the same time, you need a product with oil control properties.

Examples of such ingredients are tea tree oil, hyaluronic acid, panthenol, and beta-glucan. These types of ingredients regulate oil production and have anti-aging and nourishing benefits. It’s also important to find a product that is non-comedogenic since oily skin is also frequently acne-prone.

Dr. Meg Sison
DermatologistDr. Meg Sison

For those with oily skin, look for lightweight formulas such as sunscreen fluid or gel. These contain more humectants that draw moisture from the atmosphere and hydrate your skin without making it sticky. Look for ingredients like glycerin and hyaluronic acid.

Sunscreens with niacinamide can also help with excess sebum production. Soothing ingredients like panthenol are great because they have anti-inflammatory properties, and they likewise function as humectants. Beta-glucan is useful for its skin healing benefit because of its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It also aids in skin hydration.

For Sensitive Skin, Go Paraben-Free

For Sensitive Skin, Go Paraben-Free

People with sensitive skin often have a much harder time when it comes to skincare options. When it comes to sunscreens, typically, chemical types can cause irritation and allergic reactions. Unfortunately, it can be hard to pinpoint which ingredients in sunscreen you are sensitive to.

But according to experts, the most common culprits for untoward reactions to sunscreens are benzophenones, dibenzoyl methane, cinnamates, and added fragrances. And, of course, it is always wise to choose paraben-free and fragrance-free sunscreens if you have sensitive skin.

Thankfully, most Korean sunscreens have Centella Asiatica in their formulations. Centella Asiatica, or cica, is known for its anti-inflammatory and hydrating properties. It can also increase collagen production and improve skin elasticity.

Dr. Meg Sison
DermatologistDr. Meg Sison

Those with sensitive skin should look for sunscreens that have fewer ingredients list to minimize skin allergies or irritation. They can also look for sunscreens that are fragrance-free and only have inorganic/physical filters like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide because these two filters have no reports of photoallergy, according to existing literature.

The most common causes of UV filter photoallergy are octocrylene, oxybenzone, and avobenzone, but the prevalence of these photoallergies is actually very low.

2

Get SPF 30 or Higher and Check and the PA Level

Get SPF 30 or Higher and Check and the PA Level

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and measures how long it takes for UVB rays to cause premature aging, skin redness, and sunburn. The higher the SPF is, the higher the protection level of the product is, too. Dermatologists recommend using sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.

However, in most Asian brands, the sunscreen rating system is in PA. Not to be confused with SPF, PA refers to the level of protection from UVA rays. Unlike UVB, UVA rays do not cause sunburn, but they cause the skin to darken or turn brown. While UVA damage might not be painful, it penetrates deeply into the skin and can cause premature skin aging and other concerns.

The PA system ranges from PA+ TO PA++++. This rating is based on the Persistent Pigmentation Darkening Test (PPD), which measures darkening using UVA radiation. As with SPF, a product with a higher PA rating will give you much higher and longer sun protection. Look for sunscreens that offer broad-spectrum protection so you can stay safe from both UVA and UVB damage.

Dr. Meg Sison
DermatologistDr. Meg Sison

Broad-spectrum sunscreens are recommended so that you can have both UVA and UVB protection. It is important to choose a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, which blocks 97% of the sun’s UVB rays. A higher number SPFs block slightly more of the sun’s UVB rays, but no sunscreen can block 100% of the sun’s UVB rays.

UVA protection factor is required to be at least one-third of the labeled SPF. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the dermis, and they are responsible for photoaging, while UVB penetrates the epidermis and can cause sunburns. Both types of UV rays can actually cause skin cancer.

3

Decide Between Chemical and Physical Types

Decide Between Chemical and Physical Types

For many years, sunscreens have used a physical formulation to give sun protection. This means using physical blockers that sit on top of the skin and form a protective layer to reflect UV rays away from the skin, like a shield. The typical active ingredients used in physical blockers are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.

Chemical sunscreens, on the other hand, absorb into the skin and then absorb UV rays. They then convert the rays into heat and spit them back out as infrared waves. The most commonly-used ingredients in chemical sunscreens are avobenzone, oxybenzone, and octinoxate.

Between these two types of formulations, physical types are less likely to cause allergic reactions since they don’t get absorbed into the skin. However, they do tend to leave a white cast. On the other hand, chemical sunscreens are great for people who need a more water-resistant formulation, like swimmers, athletes, or those who spend a lot of time outdoors.

Dr. Meg Sison
DermatologistDr. Meg Sison

UV filters in sunscreens can be divided into physical/inorganic and chemical/organic filters. Organic filters can either be UVA and UVB filters. The most widely used UVB filter worldwide is octinoxate, while the most widely used UVA filter is oxybenzone. Organic filters are more cosmetically elegant, but they have the tendency to sting the eyes, especially when you accidentally rub the product in your eye area.

Inorganic filters include titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. They are photostable and do not react with organic filters. They also do not cause allergies and are recommended for children and those with sensitive skin. However, these leave a white cast which makes them undesirable to apply. The choice of chemical and physical sunscreens is largely a personal preference. Most sunscreens available in the market have both types of UV filters.

Tips from a Board-Certified Dermatologist

According to Dr. Meg, when building a skincare routine, start with the essentials: cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen. Cleansers are important to remove sebum, dirt, makeup, and sunscreen at the end of the day. Moisturizers restore our skin barrier and keep our skin hydrated. Finally, sunscreens protect our skin from the harmful effects of UV rays like premature aging, sunburn, and skin cancer.

Sunscreens are not perfect. No sunscreen can block 100% of the UV rays. So don’t just rely on sunscreen alone as a means of photoprotection. Seek shade, especially between 10 am to 4 pm when the sun’s rays are the most intense. Make sure to wear a wide-brimmed hat, UV-protective eyewear, pants, and long-sleeved shirts whenever applicable.

Frequently Asked Questions Answered By Dr. Meg Sison

If you still have some unanswered questions on your mind, Dr. Meg is here to answer some of the most asked questions on the web to further add to your sunscreen knowledge.

How Often Should You Use Sunscreen?

Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. A broad-spectrum sunscreen means it has protection for both UVA and UVB rays. Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours, especially after swimming or sweating or if you are outdoors.

Are Korean Sunscreens Suitable for Filipino Skin?

Yes. Sunscreen is a must for all individuals, regardless of skin color. Those with brown or dark brown skin are more prone to develop pigmentation like sunspots and melasma. Skin cancers in these individuals are also more advanced. That’s why sunscreen use is highly recommended.

It is a matter of finding your favorite sunscreen that is cosmetically acceptable for you at a price you can afford so that you can use it every day.

Should You Apply More Sunscreen to Get More Protection from the Sun?

It is recommended that sunscreen should be applied at a concentration of 2mg/cm2. This is equivalent to 30mL or 1 oz of sunscreen to cover the entire body surface.

In reality, studies showed that the actual usage of sunscreen is only 0.5 to 0.8mg/cm2, so the actual in-use SPF is significantly lower than that on the sunscreen label. Thus proper sunscreen application is a must to maximize photoprotection.
