The use of rollers, specifically jade facial rollers, dates back to the 17th century when elites of the Chinese Qing Dynasty claim that these rollers are effective in keeping skin ageless and beautiful. These were also used by the Egyptians and Mayans for massaging to aid muscle relief.
Fast forward to the present times, these beauty tools made a resurgence because of their benefits and not to mention, their aesthetics. Below, we listed some of the benefits you can get from using a facial roller.
Designed to give the face a gentle massage, rollers help by improving the lymph flow, increasing lymphatic drainage to reduce inflammation or swelling, and getting rid of toxinsーanall-natural detoxification!
Fluid tends to accumulate in our faces after lying down overnight. This excess fluid called lymph is normally naturally flushed out by the lymphatic system unless this is defective or blocked. With facial massage, it improves drainage through pressure and mechanical movement through the use of hands or the use of devices such as facial rollers. This can eventually reduce facial puffiness.
A roller could be used as is at room temperature, or it could be chilled in the fridge. The roller’s cool surface will cool the skin as well, which calms and soothes the skin. It is an easy and quick cure for puffiness as well as eye bags and circles!
Face rollers assist by bringing inviting fresh and more oxygenated blood and nutrients to reach the skin’s surface, which grants the skin look visibly glowing, brighter, and feel firmer.
Facial massage causes dilation of blood vessels and increases blood flow. This makes the skin appear flushed or rosy right after. People often perceive this as the "instant glow" after the manual facial massage. A study conducted in Japan revealed that facial massage can cause a 25% increase in skin blood flow after a five-minute facial massage.
The gliding motion across the skin combined with the light press help skincare products to be delivered and penetrate deeper into the skin. You may use a facial roller with your serums, moisturizers, oils, or even over your sheet mask.
There is still no significant evidence that shows facial massage can help product penetration and absorption. In animal studies, rubbing resulted in increased penetration of actives and reduced skin impedance.
But it is important to note that product penetration into the skin is influenced by many factors, such as the state of your skin upon application, the concentration and formulation of the product, and the amount being applied.
It has been reported that massaging a product itself into the skin can enhance better penetration than simply massaging the skin before the application. However, further investigation is needed to support this claim.
Below are the things you need to consider when choosing the right facial roller for you:
Generally speaking, these facial rollers are applicable to all skin types. However, some skin types could benefit more from a specific type of stone or crystal.
Known as the stone of beauty and eternal youth in Chinese culture. Jade rollers are not as smooth and are a little more resistant than other types of crystals. It is good for lifting the skin and improving blood circulation.
The use of jade stone for its healing effects dates back to ancient times in China. It helps reduce swelling and puffiness. Jade rollers also are said to adapt to your skin temperature and can help increase skin circulation. This can make the perception of "instant life" for mature skin.
As of now, the claim that jade rollers can stimulate collagen is unlikely since mere massaging on the top skin surface won't be able to penetrate the deeper skin layer (dermis) where the collagen is. For fine lines and wrinkles to lessen appearance, the collagen must be replenished, and this is highly unlikely with plain facial massage.
The crystal or healing stone for self-love and care. Rose quartz is known to ease tension and fend off negative energy that promotes love. Compared to jade, the molecular properties of rose quartz allow it to stay cooler for a little longer, so if you have sensitive and inflamed skin, this is good for you.
Rose quartz is a harder crystal than jade stone. It tends to stay cooler longer than jade stone because it doesn't adapt to the temperature of your skin. So, this is more preferred for patients with sensitive skin that needs a more cooling effect.
Amethyst, on a spiritual level, is powerful, and it is known for its purifying properties, while Obsidian is said to be deeply detoxifying. Both of these stones can help those with oily or acne-prone skin by drawing out impurities and decongesting pores to fight breakouts.
Amethyst stones and obsidian stones are believed to have anti-inflammatory effects. They are said to remove impurities, but there is currently no scientific basis for this yet. In reducing inflammation, these stones may reduce acne-prone skin.
However, if you have active red pimples on your face or any active eczema, you must avoid using facial rollers because the manual massage can cause further irritation.
Dual-ended rollers that come with two different-sized stones provide optimal benefit when using because it allows you proper coverage of different areas of the face. For instance, the smaller stone can get more into the inner corners of the eyes as opposed to just having or using one large stone.
The advantage of using a dual-ended roller with various sizes is its coverage of the different areas of the face, even the corners and angles.

Cleaning the facial roller must be done before and after every use to remove any dirt that was touched on the surface. You may wipe the stones with a soft cotton pad or soft towel. Avoid soaking it with very hot water.
To ensure deeper cleaning, you can use a gentle cleanser to wash. Make sure to dry it properly before storing it. You may opt to keep the roller in a cool place (like the fridge) or not since the stones are naturally cool in whichever place they are stored. Just make sure you store it in a dry place.
If you're looking for skincare products you could use for your facial rollers, look no further! Give your skin some extra love that it will thank you for.
