Finding the perfect shampoo goes beyond what it does for your hair. The formulation needs to go deep into the hair roots to bring out a better and healthier shine. Just like the skin, the scalp can also absorb nutrients and chemicals present in shampoo. This makes natural shampoos with less harmful chemicals and more organic ingredients the better choice.
Our hair is influenced by genetics, but exposure to heat, sunlight, and dyes can damage and weaken it. Hair does grow back, and even the driest and most brittle hair strands will eventually be replaced, but using the right natural shampoo can revitalize your current hair. Check out the buying guide with comments and tips from board-certified dermatologist Dr. Aznaida L. Tawagon-Pandapatan to guide you on your purchase!

Here are some points to consider:
For more detailed information, read through our buying guide below.
Depending on your hair's exposure to factors like heat and chemicals, it may suffer from damage like dryness, hair fall, and the formation of dandruff. Don't worry, as it's not too late to save your hair with shampoos containing the ingredients listed below.
The harsh summer heat in the country can cause dryness in both your skin and your hair. If increasing your water intake isn’t enough to keep your hair bouncy, you can use moisturizing natural shampoos to bring back its fullness. This is also ideal to pack before hitting the beach, as salty or chlorinated water can cause your hair to become dry and frizzy.
Look for ingredients that are full of fatty acids and vitamins with hair-nourishing properties. Argan oil is commonly added to shampoos thanks to its high vitamin E, fatty acid, and antioxidant content, all of which contribute to the hair’s shine. To moisturize hair, you can also look for avocado oil and cocoa butter in the ingredients list.
For those prone to dry hair or have damaged hair due to treatments and constant styling, look for moisturizing ingredients from shampoos. You may also opt for "shampoo with conditioner" formulations. Ingredients to look for that may help with dry and damaged hair are glycerine, argan oil, coconut oil, sunflower oil, shea butter, jojoba oil, and grapeseed oil.
Shea butter makes hair strong, healthy, and easy to style and manage. It also protects hair from intense heat, whether from the sun or hot hair styling tools. Your hair may also benefit from shampoos containing coconut oil because they protect against protein loss, which is the main component of hair.
Shea butter and coconut oils are some of the most common moisturizing ingredients in shampoos. While they are innately good, the effects will still depend on the shampoo's formula. When using moisturizing shampoos, make sure to rinse adequately (to leave just enough amount of these on your scalp), and shampoo regularly to ensure declogging of the follicles daily.
Dandruff is a condition of the scalp that is characterized by flaky and itchy skin. It is sometimes caused by serious skin complications like fungal infections, but it can also be due to the weather, stress levels, age, and the hair care products a person uses. To quickly cure dandruff formation, and save yourself from a potentially embarrassing encounter, switch to anti-dandruff shampoos.
Tea tree oil is a great, natural anti-dandruff ingredient found in many shampoos. It has antifungal properties that can address the cause of your dandruff. It can also calm down irritation, which is ideal if the constant itch is interfering with your day-to-day activities. You can also try ginger oil as an anti-dandruff ingredient.
Dandruff is caused by multiple factors, such as fungal infections, allergic reactions, irritations (from shampoos and conditioners), and even stress. You can try using shampoos with tea tree oil, but if you are allergic to it, try the conventional shampoos with zinc pyrithione. If dandruff persists, it is best to have it checked by a dermatologist.
Are you starting to worry about all the hair strands that fall off when you shower? Don’t panic, as this is part of the normal hair growth process, and losing hair only means that it’s making way for new ones. However, if you feel that your hair has gotten noticeably thinner, then you can opt to start using natural shampoos for hair growth.
Keep your eyes peeled for ingredients like aloe vera, castor oil, coconut oil, gugo, and rosemary oil. Aloe vera has long been used on the skin and is said to counter baldness. Coconut oil contains fatty acids that can reduce moisture loss in hair by protecting the hair shaft. Meanwhile, rosemary oil is known to stimulate the growth of new hair and prevent hair loss.
Hair shedding of up to 100 strands a day is still considered acceptable. It is part of the hair cycle. If you think that your hair sheds off more than usual, change your shampoo and conditioner to those containing moisturizing ingredients. If it persists, consult a Dermatologist for a more thorough examination of your hair and scalp.
Sulfates are a type of chemical, also known as surfactants, which are commonly present in cosmetic products like shampoos, facial washes, and soaps. So, what makes sulfates so bad? Sometimes they do the job of cleansing too well that they strip the hair of the oils it needs. They are also not recommended for people with sensitive skin, as too much sulfate can cause irritation.
Using shampoos without sulfate, your hair can retain its natural oils to keep it smooth and shiny. They are also ideal for people with colored hair, as they prolong the color's vibrance and help retain moisture to keep them from drying out. Sulfate-free shampoos are also suitable for all skin and hair types.
Sulfates are very effective in removing oil and dirt from the scalp and hair. If you do not have any hair and scalp issues such as allergic reactions, persistent itchiness, dandruff, dyed hair, or irritations, then there is no need to avoid these sulfates. In fact, some of the sulfate-free alternatives also have the potential to cause allergic reactions and irritations. Therefore, if you really need to use sulfate-free shampoos, you'll have to try them first to find a formula that works for you.
Regular shampoos, even those made with all-natural ingredients, can still be harsh on your kids' hair and scalp, so it's recommended to find formulations that are specially made for them. These are often made without potential eye irritants and make the shampoo tear-free, so you can let them shower on their own without worries.
They also come in fun and fruity scents to make kids' bath times exciting. Do note that it is also important to observe your child's skin reaction to the shampoo he or she uses, as some ingredients might trigger allergies or sensitivities. It would be best to consult with a dermatologist or their pediatrician if symptoms like itchiness and redness come up.
For kids and infants, opt for shampoos made for their age, as these tend to contain milder ingredients. If your child does not have skin and scalp sensitivity issues, scented "natural" shampoos are great, as these will make their bath time fun. For kids with skin issues such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, or contact dermatitis, it is best to opt for hypoallergenic and unscented shampoos and consult a dermatologist or a pediatrician to know which products are advisable for them.

Before you click that "add to cart" button, read some of Dr. Aznaida's tips below as she answers some of the internet's most asked questions!
For example, one of the most common allergens and irritants are the essential oils and fruit extracts, which all come from natural ingredients. For those who are sensitive to these natural ingredients, it is advisable to avoid "natural" shampoos.
Natural shampoo ingredients such as tea tree oil, other essential oils, and plant extracts, just like natural strawberry or nuts or poison ivy, can have detrimental effects for those who are allergic to these "natural ingredients". If you have no sensitivity to the ingredients listed in a particular natural shampoo, then that natural shampoo is a good alternative to the conventional ones.
Given that you are not allergic to a particular natural shampoo, you may use it once a day, just like other regular shampoos. Personally, I prefer to shampoo at night, so I don't sleep with all the gunk and dirt, which may affect hair health and growth. Also, note that the amount of shampoo that you should use will depend on the length and thickness of your hair.
If you are not allergic to a natural shampoo, pairing it with a natural conditioner is alright. Again, check the conditioner's ingredient list for possible allergens or irritants. Keep in mind to apply conditioners on the hair shafts and tips. Avoid applying to the scalp as this may cause scalp irritation or allergic reactions. Remember, hair conditioners are for the hair shafts, not for the scalp.
