How Often Should a Diaper Be Changed?
Diapers should be changed frequently to reduce the risk of the skin's exposure to irritants (sweat, poop, and pee). How frequent? A healthy newborn pees at least 5x a day and poops at least 1-2x a day, so that's an average of around 6 diaper changes a day. It is best to change the diaper as soon as you detect urine and/or stool.
A cloth diaper has to be changed more frequently because it has less absorbability than disposable diapers. Some disposable diapers have wetness indicators but make it a habit to check often to ensure there's no leakage or skin irritation.
How to Take Care of Diaper Rash?
An article in Pediatrics in Review written by Dr. Helms and Dr. Burrows summarized a straightforward mnemonic to recall how to take care of diaper rashes: ABCDE.
- A - Air dry, meaning the longer the diaper-free time, the better to prevent diaper dermatitis. It increases air circulation and drying while decreasing the exposure time between your baby's skin and irritants.
- B - Barrier topical cream or ointment like those with zinc oxide, petroleum, or vitamin A & D ingredients. These are additional barriers to the skin while your baby's natural skin barrier takes time to heal itself. Place the topical product thickly on the diaper area (as thick as cake icing) and let it air dry.
- C - Cleaning the skin with a gentle cleanser for every diaper change. A gentle touch (not scrubbing too much) will also help a lot.
- D - Diaper changes need to be done frequently, not just when the baby is crying because they're heavily soiled. Check the diaper often, even if the material has good absorbency. Most disposable diapers now have a wetness indicator so you can easily see if you need to change your baby's diaper.
- E - Education. Diaper dermatitis can frequently happen if the root cause is not addressed. The pediatrician needs to explain to the parents and/or caregiver the cause of the diaper dermatitis and ways on how to manage it and, more importantly, how to prevent it.
When Is the Best Time to Stop Using Diapers?
The best time to stop using diapers is when children are already starting toilet training. This is not an abrupt stop because toilet training takes time to master for children. In general, they're physiologically ready at around 18 months of age.
However, successful toilet training does not only take into account the child's chronological age but also their developmental milestones (cognitive, motor, and verbal skills) that will help with the process. Some kids may also regress or resist toilet training, and that may be a sign for parents to try again some other time.
