Per the recommendation of CDC, a hand sanitizer should at least have an alcohol content between 60-95% for it to effectively kill bacteria and reduce the growth of germs. Sanitizers with a lower alcohol concentration may simply reduce the growth of germs instead of killing them directly.
It must also be noted that the amount you put on your hands also matters. When using hand sanitizer, you must cover all the surfaces of your hands in order to achieve maximum effectiveness.

Indeed, the recommendation of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is to use hand sanitizers containing at least 60% alcohol. Alcohol-based sanitizers typically contain alcohol in the form of ethanol or isopropanol.
The ingredients used in a sanitizer indicate its effectivity and whether it's safe or not to use. Below, we specify what to look for in a hand sanitizer.
While they effectively kill germs, alcohol-based sanitizers can sometimes disrupt the skin’s natural pH level and cause irritation to sensitive skin. Thus, a non-alcohol sanitizer is a recommended alternative in such cases. The CDC, however, warns that alcohol-free sanitizers may not be as effective as their alcohol-based counterparts in killing germs.

Did you know that there are alcohol-free sanitizers? Alcohol-free sanitizers typically contain substances with disinfectant properties like benzalkonium chloride or antimicrobial properties like triclosan.
High content of alcohol or frequent application can cause flare-ups, drying, and irritated skin. Sanitizers that contain emollients will protect your skin from getting dehydrated. Thus, choose sanitizers that include skin-friendly ingredients such as aloe vera, vitamin E, glycerin, dimethicone, and many more.

Our heightened efforts for hand hygiene have undeniably resulted in increased rates of hand dermatitis ranging from dryness to full-blown chronic hand eczema. Choosing a hand sanitizer with moisturizing ingredients helps reduce this risk. Good ingredients include emollients like glycerin that moisturize the skin and help restore the skin barrier.
Known to have antibacterial properties, triclosan is often used in detergents, deodorants, and other personal care products. However, the FDA banned the use of Triclosan in antibacterial hand and body products in 2016 due to its toxic nature.
Exposure to triclosan has been associated with health risks, so read the labels of hand sanitizers carefully to make sure that triclosan is not in the list of ingredients.

Triclosan has typically been incorporated as one of the ingredients in alcohol-free sanitizers as well as in anti-bacterial soaps. However, given that there are so many available choices, it's best to avoid this particular ingredient as it has been identified as one of the possible irritants by the American Contact Dermatitis Society.

Below are some of the most asked questions on the web answered by board-certified dermatologist Dr. Katrina Habaluyas Luz.
A small amount on the palm of one hand that is sufficient enough to cover all surfaces of the hands and fingers while rubbing hands with the sanitizer should be used.
If you have an open wound, better to wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
Hand sanitizers are not an alternative to hand washing. Remember, washing hands with soap and water is still preferable as it reduces the amounts of all types of germs and chemicals on hands. If soap and water are not available, then you can opt to use a hand sanitizer with a final concentration of at least 60% ethanol or 70% isopropyl alcohol.
Hand hygiene is a key in the prevention of disease transmission. With that, hand sanitizers do come in handy given their convenience, especially in situations with a lack of water and time alongside their proven efficacy in lowering the microbial load.
However, for the hand sanitizer to remain effective, it should be used on hands that are free from soil, dirt, blood, or lubrication.
Sometimes, handwashing or using a sanitizer will just not cut it. Have a look at some of our recommendations below to make sure that your body is protected from within.
