Toilet paper is mainly used for bathroom purposes, while facial tissue is used on the face. It may seem as straightforward as that, but their use is not really that interchangeable. Both are made out of paper pulps and are designed for single use.
Toilet paper comes in a perforated paper roll consisting of 500-1000 sheets. It is more absorbent and made to dissolve quickly as it can be flushed down the toilet, though it is not really advisable to do so. Depending on your preferred thickness, you can choose between a single-ply, 2-ply, and even 3-ply.
On the other hand, facial tissue is used to wipe the face, but its primary function is actually for blowing your nose. Also known as a paper handkerchief, facial tissues have a much smoother and softer feel, which makes for a more pleasant experience when wiping your nose or face. They also do not disintegrate as quickly as toilet paper.
Tissue paper and toilet paper are both made up of paper pulp. However, upon further inspection, it's clear that they are pretty different. For one, tissue paper is smooth in texture, making it more suitable and gentler for the face.
Just pat and/or dab with the facial tissue. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing with it. Remember, to some extent, that tissue paper still acts as a form of physical exfoliation.
The ply refers to the number of layers a tissue has. It can range from as little as 1-ply to as many as 4-ply. Generally, the more ply there is, the thicker and more durable the tissue is. This is because as the plies add up, so do the weight and absorbency.
2-ply is the most common type you could use for various things, while 3-ply and 4-ply are regarded as more luxurious. In this regard, they would be great to use as a handkerchief and for mopping up spills.
However, this would also depend on the quality of the tissue. For example, there are relatively thick tissues, so you could get away with just 2-ply varieties. Another thing to keep in mind is that the higher the ply, the more expensive the tissue will be.
Absorption is an important property for tissue paper since its basic use is to wipe things up. In general, the ply determines its absorption capacity. So you can choose based on what your uses would typically be for it.
When looking at tissues, you might find labels such as virgin pulp. This means the tissue does not make use of recycled pulp. Virgin pulp is made from brand-new wood pulp, the main element in tissues. It is more affordable than recycled tissue since it uses fewer steps. It is also considered high-quality paper but requires the use of more trees.
If you are concerned about your environmental impact, you could check the label and see if it is eco-friendly, which means it was sustainably sourced. Recycled tissues are good for the environment, but they are rather costly. This is because the paper undergoes multiple processes, such as collecting and sorting. Later on, it is chemically processed to remove inks and other elements.
Recycled pulp does not always mean inferior quality. In fact, its quality has recently stepped up to match virgin pulp. But do look for tissues that are chlorine and bleach-free to avoid irritation. Keep in mind that recycled paper is not as durable, as the fibers weaken after it undergoes processing.
Choosing between virgin pulp vs recycled pulp may not have crossed your mind when choosing which tissue paper to buy.
Interestingly, a journal published by Aneta Masternak-Janus entitled "Life cycle analysis of tissue paper manufacturing from virgin pulp or recycled waste paper" revealed that tissue paper manufacturing from virgin pulp takes its toll on the environment more than from recycled waste paper in all endpoints: human health, ecosystems, and resources.
Facial tissues could come in a box or plastic packaging. To know which one to get, think about where you will use it. Are you leaving it at home or are you taking it with you? Boxed tissues have sturdier packaging and a neater aesthetic, so they are less likely to wrinkle. They are perfect for home use as they are bulky to bring for travel.
However, if you often leave the house, tissues in plastic packaging would be ideal. You can find facial tissues in a variety of sizes, from rectangular ones to pocket-sized ones, so you can easily choose depending on your needs.
Packaging is another consideration in buying tissue paper. If you want something handy and easy to carry, plastic packaging is the way to go. However, you might also want to consider getting those in a box, as these can be recycled or upcycled too!

Here are some helpful tips, as Dr. Katrina Luz answers some of the most-asked questions on the internet!
Best to air dry! If you must, then simply pat dry.
Just blotting motions with tissue is fine. The goal is to remove any excess oil but not strip the skin of it completely.
From a dermatologist's perspective, you're better off using your fingers when removing your makeup. If you have heavy makeup, you might want to consider doing a double cleanse with an oil-based cleanser followed by a water-based cleanser.
Aside from facial tissues, you would need other items to complete your hygiene kit. Check out these articles for more buying guides and product recommendations!
