Before purchasing a high chair for your little one, there are some things that you need to consider such as its function, flexibility, adjustability, foldability, and safety features. To know more about these, check out our buying guide below.
When it comes to high chairs, safety should always be your top priority. Ensuring your baby is securely seated and protected from potential hazards is crucial for a worry-free mealtime.
The five-point harness system is a must-have feature! This is the gold standard in baby high chair safety.
Safety is the most critical factor when choosing a high chair. A key safety feature to look for is a five-point harness. This type of harness includes straps that secure your baby at five different points: over the shoulders, across the hips, and between the legs. These straps work together to keep your baby securely seated, preventing them from slipping out or attempting to climb from the chair.
The harness should also be easy to adjust, allowing you to customize the fit as your baby grows, ensuring continued safety and comfort. Additionally, it’s advisable to look for high chairs that carry local or international safety certifications, such as the Children’s Product Certificate (CPC) for American brands or the EN 14988:2017 certification for European products. These certifications indicate that the high chair meets stringent safety standards, providing extra reassurance that your baby is safe.
Locally, there are currently no safety certifications, but doing a thorough check of the product for the main safety features we want in a high chair should be helpful in guiding your decision.
The high chair should be sturdy and not easy to topple over, with your child's usual amount of movement and activity.
High chairs made from strong, durable materials like metal or solid wood are ideal for ensuring your baby’s safety during mealtimes.
Metal like steel or aluminum - offer excellent strength and resilience. These materials provide a solid, stable base that can withstand daily use, reducing the risk of the chair tipping over even when your baby is active or wiggly.
Solid wood - are not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly durable. Wood offers natural strength and weight, contributing to the chair’s stability and longevity.
On the other hand, plastic high chairs, while lighter and often more affordable, may not offer the same level of durability and stability. They are more prone to wobbling or tipping, which can pose a safety hazard.
Choosing a high chair made from robust materials like metal or solid wood, you can ensure that your baby’s high chair is both safe and long-lasting, providing peace of mind and value over time
Beyond the basic harness and frame, additional safety features can enhance your baby’s overall experience.
Extra safety features can greatly enhance your baby’s comfort and safety during mealtimes. A footrest helps maintain a stable posture, reducing the risk of slipping or sliding in the chair. Proper posture not only improves comfort but also adds to overall safety.
Another key feature is the tray attachment. Ensure the tray is securely fastened to prevent accidental spills and potential injuries. A snug-fitting tray minimizes the risk of it coming loose, and it should have no gaps where your baby’s fingers could get caught.
We really want the baby to have that nice, completely upright position when they're seated in their chair to ensure they are able to eat safely.
While some high chairs offer reclining features, these are not ideal for feeding times. A fully upright position is crucial for safe eating, as it helps prevent choking and ensures that your baby can focus on their meal without discomfort.
Chairs with reclining backrests might be more suitable for resting or napping but should be avoided during mealtimes.
This is essential for ensuring that your baby is comfortably and correctly positioned during mealtimes.
Comfort is just as important as safety. According to Dr. Joey, here are the key ergonomic features to look for:
High chairs can get messy quickly, so choosing one that’s easy to clean is essential. A chair that simplifies cleanup will save you time and help maintain a hygienic environment for your baby.
Mealtimes can be messy, so ease of cleaning is an essential consideration when choosing a high chair. A detachable tray allows for quick and thorough cleaning after meals, ensuring that no food particles are left behind.
This feature is especially useful for busy parents who need to maintain a clean and hygienic environment for their baby without spending too much time on cleanup.
Being unable to properly clean your baby's high chair not only promotes an unsanitary eating environment but can also wear away the material of the chair.
While some high chairs come with intricate designs, they can be challenging to clean. Chairs with too many nooks and crannies can trap food and dirt, making it difficult to maintain cleanliness.
Over time, this can lead to an unsanitary eating environment and even damage the chair’s materials. Opt for simpler designs that are easier to wipe down and keep clean, ensuring that your baby’s high chair remains in good condition for longer.
As your baby grows, their high chair should adapt to their changing needs. A high chair that grows with your child offers long-term value.
To maximize the use of your child's high chair, look for features that can adjust as your baby grows. Key adjustable features include:
These adjustable features not only provide comfort and security but also offer long-term value, reducing the need to purchase new chairs as your baby grows.
By opting for a foldable high chair, you can enjoy the convenience of easy storage and portability without sacrificing the safety and comfort your baby needs during mealtimes.
A foldable high chair offers a practical solution for families with limited space. These chairs are designed to be compact and easy to store, making them ideal for smaller living areas. When selecting a foldable high chair, ensure the folding mechanism is secure, and the chair locks firmly into place when in use, maintaining stability and safety.
Foldable high chairs are also great for travel, allowing you to easily take the chair along on trips or to family gatherings. This versatility makes foldable high chairs a convenient choice for families who need flexibility without sacrificing safety.
Always check the hinges and locks. They should be sturdy and reliable, preventing the chair from accidentally folding or collapsing while your baby is seated.

If you have some questions on your mind about high chairs, there is no one more qualified to answer them than a board-certified pediatrician! Read on to know Dr. Joey Cuayo-Estanislao's answers to some of the most asked questions on the web.
Babies will generally be ready to sit upright sometime around four to six months of age, but on average, babies will be able to accomplish this by six months. We will have to check for certain cues to see if the baby can already handle sitting on a high chair.
Do keep in mind that babies should never be left unattended on high chairs! When they're seated on their chairs, always check that the safety straps are snug and secure. Finally, as much as possible, use high chairs only during meal times.
We will have to check for certain cues to see if the baby can already handle sitting on a high chair. The first is that the baby's head and neck should be very stable (without the need for props or assistance) when seated upright.
The second thing to check is that the baby’s shoulders should be straight without the need to support them when they are seated. The baby’s arms should also be able to move about and reach around on their own, with their hands able and ready to grab onto the tray to steady the torso.
Remember, though, that the tray is not a restraint; it can, however, be something for your baby to use to stabilize themselves, so do check if the tray is stable and secure. Once your baby has achieved this, you'll see that they can sit upright with very little support and use their hands freely to grab the food and explore.
When they are able to sit upright, babies can hold their heads up for a minute or two. However, if you notice that they are not able to sustain this position on their own, it is not yet their time to sit upright. You'll notice their head droop to the side and their body slide a little sideways and down.
Please don't be discouraged! Just keep letting them practice in a safe place with your full attention. Their strength will eventually improve, and you will see that your baby is ready.
High chairs that meet safety standards are great to help your baby have a safe and enjoyable mealtime. They allow your child the enjoyment of being able to eat and try their hand at feeding themselves while also giving you peace of mind that they are secure in their seat.
It also allows them to join you at your family's dining table, which is a delightful experience for both your baby and the rest of the family. Please do make sure they cannot reach anything with their limbs, which they can grab or knock over.
Definitely! Like with all your child's things, please try to keep everything as clean as possible, particularly your baby's high chair and mealtime paraphernalia (plates, bowls, cups, utensils). Since your baby uses these during their eating time, it's good to ensure that everything is clean and sanitized so we can avoid upset tummies.
It's good to be thorough when cleaning the high chair as well, as food can get stuck in the nooks and crannies of the chair, which can lead to mold developing. When cleaning the high chair and its accessories, standard house cleaning agents are safe and effective. Make sure that the high chair is dry, with no cleaning agent residue, before you place your child on the chair to avoid inadvertent ingestions.
When your baby is ready to start on solids, it's tempting to reach for the pre-packed baby food in the grocery store. As convenient as grocery-bought baby food can be, I would always ask parents to prepare their baby's food at home. This ensures that the food they are receiving is hygienically prepared and made with good-quality ingredients. I also highly encourage parents to choose fresh and natural food (try local or indigenous food and veggies!).
At 6 months old (and once they are developmentally ready to take their solids), your baby can be started on pureed food. To help soften the food when preparing your puree, I would recommend using breastmilk instead of water. And please do not add salt and sweeteners to your baby’s food! Please also do not give babies younger than 1 year old the following: honey, cow’s milk, fruit juices, sugary treats, unpasteurized food, and cured or preserved meats.
Now that your baby is transitioning to solid food, you need other items to make feeding time easier and better. Click the article links below to see our recommended products!
