10 Best Baby High Chairs in the Philippines 2023 | Buying Guide Reviewed by Pediatrician

Getting a high chair will make your baby's transition to solid food so much easier for your baby. When your little one turns 6 months old, you can start introducing solid food to her such as puréed avocado, squash, or banana, mixed with a bit of breast milk. You’ll know that your baby is ready to eat with a spoon if she can sit upright and hold her head up.

From directly feeding on the breast or a bottle, a high chair will provide a proper place to eat – helping her in getting more familiar with the routine. In this article, we prepared a guide and our top 10 recommended baby high chairs that you can purchase online. We also have included some comments and tips from board-certified pediatrician Dr. Joanna Pamela Cuayo-Estanislao so that you only get accurate and helpful information.

How to Choose a Baby High Chair – Buying Guide

Here are some key points to consider:

  1. Select between a regular high chair and a convertible multichair.
  2. Look for a detachable tray for easy cleaning.
  3. Consider the available space that you have at home.
  4. Check the safety features such as weight limit, straps, and anti-skid legs.

For more detailed information, read through our buying guide below.

1

Select Between a Regular High Chair and a Convertible Multichair

Feeding your little one will be a breeze once you have a suitable high chair. It should be compatible with her age for a good fit and secure position.

Regular High Chairs for a Baby’s Comfortable Mealtime

Regular High Chairs for a Baby’s Comfortable Mealtime

A regular high chair is perfect for babies 6 months old up until they turn two. It has all the basic parts – a sturdy seat with proper back and side support, safety buckles & straps to keep your baby in place, stable legs, and a wide tray for the feeding bowl, plate, and water bottle. For more comfortability, some high chairs have a padded cushion seat and a footrest.

Others are built with reclined positions for smaller babies as well as adjustable legs and seat heights to accommodate bigger babies. However, once your baby reaches the height and weight limit of a regular high chair, you would have to look for a bigger chair that will fit them better.

Dr. Joey Cuayo-Estanislao
Pediatrician and Child Health SpecialistDr. Joey Cuayo-Estanislao

When getting a high chair for your child, there are three important things you need to check to help decrease the risk of accidents. The first is that the chair cannot be tipped over easily. Make sure that the base is stable (go for wider set chairs with sturdy legs), and the chair does not easily topple over when moved.

Second, if the chair is foldable, ensure that when assembled, the locks are secure and are not easily released. Finally, check if the chair has a restraint system or safety straps (ideally, these would be 3-point or 5-point harnesses). Remember: the table of the high chair is not considered an adequate restraint and should not be used as such.

Convertible Chairs for Extended Use in the Toddler Years

Convertible Chairs for Extended Use in the Toddler Years

Meanwhile, your baby will get more use out of a convertible high chair because you can rearrange the parts to suit your baby’s age. You can set it up as a regular high chair for your infant then convert it into a booster seat for a toddler.

A booster seat is a smaller version of a high chair, without the legs. You can strap it on top of a regular dining chair so your baby can eat with you at the table. Some variants come with an extra cushion or padding for the seat.

Dr. Joey Cuayo-Estanislao
Pediatrician and Child Health SpecialistDr. Joey Cuayo-Estanislao

The best choice for a high chair is one that is freestanding and stable. However, if you plan to get a booster chair for eating out, travel, or lack of space for a standard high chair, please check its restraints. Look for one that locks (and not just hooks) onto the table

Check that the table you will be using is heavy enough to support your child's weight without tipping. When securing the chair, check to see whether your child's feet can touch or kick against the table. If your child pushes against the table, it may dislodge the seat.

2

Look for a Detachable Tray for Easy Cleaning

Look for a Detachable Tray for Easy Cleaning

Feeding a baby can be messy, especially once you start letting your little one eat independently. It’ll be convenient if the high chair comes with a detachable tray – even better if it’s a tray-within-a-tray feature wherein a lightweight top tray covers the main tray.

This way, cleaning up after the meal will be easier. You can simply remove the top tray to wipe or wash the crumbs and spills away. It is also an advantage if the seat is wipeable. If the chair has a padded cushion that is made of fabric, check first if it can be removed and machine-washed

Dr. Joey Cuayo-Estanislao
Pediatrician and Child Health SpecialistDr. Joey Cuayo-Estanislao

When looking at high chairs with detachable parts, check that attachments fit well and are not easily detached once secured. If possible, look for those with a tray-within-a-tray feature so that there is a main tray component of the high chair that is not removable.

Remember that any detachable part can pose as a risk for a potential accident. Always check that any and all detachable parts can be secured well. It's also good to periodically check your chair for any wear and tear.

3

Consider the Available Space That You Have at Home

Consider the Available Space That You Have at Home

Baby high chairs can take up a big floor area in your home. Always check the dimensions of the product to make sure that you have ample space in your dining area for the high chair.

You must be able to maneuver and reach easily for the bowl, spoon, bib, and other feeding essentials while your baby is sitting in the high chair. Some high chairs are foldable, which are ideal if you have limited storage space.

Speaking of space, you can also consider the design and color of the high chair based on the aesthetics of your home. High chairs that are made of wood will not stand out so much and will blend nicely with your furniture. You can also go for a neutral color, so you’ll have the option to use it again for your next baby.

Dr. Joey Cuayo-Estanislao
Pediatrician and Child Health SpecialistDr. Joey Cuayo-Estanislao

Another thing about considering the space in your home - check that the high chair is placed at a good distance away from cabinets, counters, and shelves. On the chair, the baby is able to grab anything at the height of the chair and is within their arm's reach.

When placing your high chair by the table, keep the distance between the table and chair enough that the baby cannot reach the table with his feet. A common accident is when the baby can kick the table from his high chair and can topple things over, or even topple the high chair over!

4

Check the Safety Features Such as Weight Limit, Straps, and Anti-Skid Legs

Check the Safety Features Such as Weight Limit, Straps, and Anti-Skid Legs

Apart from the size and design, also check the safety features of the high chair. For example, look into the height and weight limit of the chair. Getting the right chair for your baby’s age will guarantee that the seat will not break and tip over.

The high chair must also have a 5-point safety strap – one that goes across the baby’s shoulders and body, through the legs, and then locks in the middle with a buckle near the crotch. This provides a secure fit, especially with a squirmy baby.

The seat and tray, meanwhile, must have round and smooth edges. Also, the less moving parts, the better – fewer risk of tiny fingers being trapped, pinched, or stuck. Moreover, the chair legs must spread outwards for more stability. They should also be anti-skid. If the high chair has castor wheels for easy gliding inside the house, make sure that it can be locked to keep it in place.

Dr. Joey Cuayo-Estanislao
Pediatrician and Child Health SpecialistDr. Joey Cuayo-Estanislao

When buying a high chair, always check for:

  1. The stability of the chair (it should not be easy to tip over, even when being moved side to side),
  2. Ensure that its locks are secure and not easily dislodged, and
  3. Make sure it has its own safety straps or restraints (usually 3-point or 5-point harnesses, with the latter being more secure)

Before purchasing the chair, be sure that you are confident in assembling and placing your child securely in the chair. If the chair has any detachable parts, make sure that they can be secured well, and your child will not be able to dislodge anything, even when they are at their most active.

Expert's Comment About the Top 10 Products

Dr. Joey Cuayo-Estanislao
Pediatrician and Child Health SpecialistDr. Joey Cuayo-Estanislao

Like with any furniture or equipment meant for your baby, please always ensure that the high chair you will be getting for your little one meets safety standards. It's good practice to check online for any recalls or warnings for a particular chair model before (and even after!) making a purchase.

It's also good to be aware that most high chair accidents have been due to falls from when a child attempted to climb into or out of the high chair; when the chair was tipped over as a child pushed back or rocked back and forth while seated in the high chair; or when a component (such as the restraint, tray, or lock) of the high chair failed.

All of these can be avoided by buying good quality high chairs, using all the safety mechanisms of the chair at all times, checking the high chair periodically for any damages and wear and tear, placing the high chair a safe distance away from other objects and furniture, and never leaving your child unsupervised when on their high chair.

Frequently Asked Questions Answered By Dr. Joey Cuayo

If you have some questions on your mind about high chairs, there is no one more qualified to answer them than a board-certified pediatrician! Read on below for Dr. Joey Cuayo's answers to some of the most asked questions on the web.

When Should You Start Seating Your Baby in a High Chair?

Babies will generally be ready to sit upright sometime around four to six months of age, but, on average, babies will be able to accomplish this by six months. We will have to check for certain cues to see if the baby can already handle sitting on a high chair.

Do keep in mind that babies should never be left unattended on high chairs! When they're seated on their chairs, always check that their safety straps are snug and secure. Finally, as much as possible, use high chairs only during meal times.

How to Know if Your Baby Is Ready for a High Chair?

Babies will generally be ready to sit upright sometime around four to six months of age, but, on average, babies will be able to accomplish this by six months. We will have to check for certain cues to see if the baby can already handle sitting on a high chair. The first is that baby's head and neck should be very stable (without the need for props or assistance) when seated upright.

The second thing to check for is that baby’s shoulders should be straight without the need to support them when they are seated. Baby’s arms should also be able to move about and reach around on their own, with their hands able and ready to grab onto the tray to steady the torso.

Remember, though, the tray is not a restraint; it can, however, be something for your baby to use to stabilize themselves, so do check that the tray is stable and secure). Once your baby is able to achieve this, you'll see that they are able to sit upright with very little support and they are able to use their hands freely to grab food and explore.

What Are the Signs That Your Baby Is Not Ready for a High Chair?

When they are still the ability to sit upright, babies can hold their heads up for a minute or two, but you will then notice them tire if they are not yet ready to sustain the position on their own. You'll see the baby's head droop to the side, and their body will slide a little sideways and down. If you notice that this happens with your baby, it is not yet their time to sit upright.

Please don't be discouraged! Just keep letting them practice in a safe place with your full attention. Their strength will eventually improve, and you will see that your baby is ready.

Are High Chairs Good for Babies?

High chairs that meet safety standards are great to help your child have a safe and enjoyable mealtime. They allow your child the enjoyment of being able to eat and try their hand at feeding themselves while also giving you peace of mind that your child is secure in their seat.

It also allows them to join you at your family's dining table, which is a delightful experience for both your baby and the rest of the family. Please do make sure they cannot reach anything with their limbs that they can grab or knock over.

Do You Have to Sanitize the High Chair?

Definitely! Like with all your child's things, please try to keep everything clean as possible. Particularly for your baby's high chair and mealtime paraphernalia (plates, bowls, cups, utensils). Since your baby uses these during their eating time, it's good to ensure that everything is clean and sanitized so we can avoid upset tummies.

It's good to be thorough when cleaning your high chair as well, as food can get stuck in the nooks and crannies of the chair, which can lead to mold developing. When cleaning your high chair and its accessories, standard house cleaning agents are safe and effective. Make sure that the high chair is dry, with no cleaning agent residue, before you place your child on the chair to avoid inadvertent ingestions.

More Tips from Dr. Joey

When your baby is ready to start on solids, it's tempting to reach for the pre-packed baby food in the grocery store. As convenient as grocery-bought baby food can be, I would always ask parents to opt for food prepared at home. Preparing your baby's food yourself ensures that the food they are receiving is hygienically prepared and made with good quality ingredients. I also highly encourage parents to choose fresh and natural food (try local or indigenous food and veggies!).

At 6 months old (and once they are developmentally ready to take their solids), your baby can be started on pureed food. To help soften the food when preparing your puree, I would recommend using breastmilk instead of water. And please do not add salt and sweeteners to your baby’s food! Please also do not give babies younger than 1 year old the following: honey, cow’s milk, fruit juices, sugary treats, unpasteurized food, and cured or preserved meats.

Kitchen Must-Haves for Your Little One’s Solid Food Menu

Preparing homemade baby food such as puréed carrots, squash and broccoli allows you to control the ingredients and avoid the preservatives, sugar, and salt that are found in store-bought variants.
