A tinted moisturizer works like your typical moisturizer, but it has a slight coverage. You can use it whenever you want to keep your skin hydrated and moisturized. Plus, the added tint enhances your complexion and evens out your tone. And your skin can benefit from sunscreen protection it has.
It usually has a nude shade and gives a glowy, dewy, and healthy finish. It is perfect when you don't feel like wearing a lot of makeup or want to achieve the "no-makeup" makeup look.
One of my go-to hacks for preventing maskne is using a tinted moisturizer. The moisturizer acts as a barrier that protects the skin by minimizing friction from the mask. Additionally, the tint provides some coverage allowing you to skip make-up altogether!
Here are some points to consider:

In choosing skincare products, we have all been told to select appropriately for our skin type. Moisturizers fall into three main categories: humectants, occlusives, and emollients. Many moisturizers actually contain a combination of these three, and the ratio varies depending on the product, so choose one that best fits your needs.
This type prevents the loss of moisture and improves skin hydration. Common humectants include hyaluronic acid, glycerin, sorbitol, sodium PCA, and propylene glycol.
Humectants are useful for all skin types. Oil-free products with water-based humectants such as glycerin or sodium PCA are recommended to those who have normal to oily or oily skin with dry-dehydrated areas.
Majority of the time, you will find moisturizers containing different combinations of the 3 types of moisturizers - humectants, occlusives, emollients. So you can choose the right ratio based on your skin's needs.
Let's start with humectants. Humectants act by drawing water from the environment into the skin. If you want a lighter more watery texture, look for a moisturizer with more humectants.
Occlusive substances create a seal over the skin to prevent water loss. Dry to very dry skin types can benefit from this. Common occlusives include dimethicone, squalene, propylene glycol, lecithin, cocoa butter, shea butter, lanolin, petrolatum, paraffin, and beeswax.
Occlusives, on the other hand, act by forming a layer on top of the skin, thus, locking the moisture in. If you have a dry skin type, you may benefit more from a thicker cream moisturizer, so look for one with a higher ratio of occlusives.
Emollients function by filling the gaps between the skin cells, which results in smooth skin. Common emollients include dimethicone, trisiloxane, ceramides, linoleic acid, and caprylyl glycol.
A moisturizer with higher content of emollients and occlusives works well for dry skin. Emollient creams and lotions are recommended for dry to dehydrated skin. Creams usually contain more oil than water, which makes it emollient. It softens rough skin and makes it look better.
Lastly, emollients act by filling in the gaps in the skin. These are generally oily but their texture can vary from light to heavy.
Hearing about antioxidants isn't new to us, as we always encounter this word in food and skincare. Antioxidants help the skin stay healthy and vibrant.
Vitamin C is a known antioxidant, skin brightening, anti-inflammatory agent used in many skin care products. It is used to brighten uneven skin tone and improve the signs of aging.
If you have a product with vitamin C in it, best to use it in the morning so that you can maximize its benefits. There are studies that show that vitamin C when paired with sunscreen can boost UV protection. But remember, it does not replace it!
Studies stated that vitamin E is effective in limiting the potential damage related to UVB radiation from sunlight. It reduces the signs of aging and improves the appearance of dry, rough, and damaged skin.
The most typical forms of vitamin E are D-alpha-tocopherol, D-alpha-tocopherol acetate, dl-alpha tocopherol, and dl-alpha-tocopherol acetate.
Vitamin E has been shown to be more effective when used in combination with other antioxidant ingredients, like vitamin C!
Resveratrol is abundantly found in grapes, seeds, nuts, and red wine. It promotes skin firmness and elasticity. It also helps protect skin from damage caused by UVB radiation.
Studies show that skin aging is associated with a depletion of naturally occurring antioxidants that serve as a defense mechanism against free radical damage. This is where resveratrol comes in. Interestingly, resveratrol also reduces fine lines and wrinkles and enhances skin firmness and elasticity.
Applying sunscreen is one of the basics of skincare and anti-aging prevention. Experts say that the sun is one of the known causes of premature skin aging. The sun emits UVA and UVB rays that can cause fine lines, wrinkling, pigmentation, and skin damage.
Skin experts advise wearing sunscreen daily with at least SPF 30, which filters out 97 percent of the UVB rays. If you prefer a tinted moisturizer with a lower SPF, it's highly recommended to still put on sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to get adequate skin protection.
I always love a moisturizer with SPF! It is still advisable to apply a standalone sunscreen. Why? Well, chances are, if you are applying a moisturizer with SPF, you aren't applying the recommended amount of 2mg/cm2 for adequate sun protection!
Although tinted moisturizers barely give any coverage, do not choose a shade that will make your face look a shade or two lighter or darker. Getting the right shade enhances your complexion and gives you that lovely, healthy-looking skin. Depending on the brand, tinted moisturizers may come in a wide range of shades. However, there are also some brands that carry very limited shade selections.
It is still best to check the actual product to see if the shade matches your skin. If you aren't able to test the product, we suggest using online tools that can help you find the right shadeーa good example is Findation.
Tinted moisturizers are not too common yet so it may be a challenge to find the exact shade for your skin color. However, since the coverage it provides is not too heavy it's fairly easier to shuffle through the different shades compared to a foundation.
Since the moisturizer may contain active ingredients like vitamin C that quickly deteriorates when exposed to sunlight, it is best to choose a moisturizer that is stored in opaque packaging. This ensures that the product maintains its efficacy. Additionally, go for products kept in safe, airtight, and leak-proof containers.
Remember pretty packaging is usually the first thing that attracts us. But choosing the right packaging is key to ensuring you are getting what you pay for!

More questions in mind? Let Dr. Katrina enlighten you with vital information and tips as she answers some of the most asked questions about tinted moisturizers.
Unfortunately, tinted moisturizers don't get a free pass from the possibility of causing acne. Anything that potentially clogs pores can lead to the development of comedones and eventually full-blown pimples.
Tinted moisturizers are best applied after cleansing the face in the morning and followed up with a sunscreen!
Cleansing with a water-based cleanser is enough to remove a tinted moisturizer.
