10 Best Yoga Mats in the Philippines 2026 | Buying Guide Reviewed by Fitness Coach

You don't have to be a dedicated yoga practitioner to invest in a good yoga mat. It's just as useful for any workout where you need cushioning and grip between you and the floor, such as bodyweight training and mat-based Pilates.

To avoid ending up with a yoga mat that slips, sags, or doesn't fit your practice, we break down exactly what to check in the buying guide below. We've also rounded up the best options on Lazada and Shopee to help narrow down your choices.

How to Choose a Yoga Mat - Buying Guide

It might seem like any mat would work, but a reliable yoga mat can make all the difference in your activity. Generally, a good one comes down to four things: how well it cushions your body, how securely it grips the floor, whether it fits your body and routine, and how easy it is to clean.

1

Select the Right Thickness for Comfort and Balance

Mat thickness affects both cushioning and stability. Thicker mats provide more support for sensitive joints, but they also put more distance between you and the floor, which can make standing and balance poses feel less stable.

2–3mm: Best for Travel

2–3mm: Best for Travel

Choose a thin mat if you frequently travel or carry your mat to classes. Its lightweight, compact design is easy to pack, while its closer-to-the-floor feel can provide better stability during standing and balance poses. However, it offers less cushioning for kneeling, seated, and floor-based poses.

Thin mats are suitable for use on the beach, grass, and carpeted flooring

4–6mm: Best for All-Around Use

4–6mm: Best for All-Around Use

This range offers a good balance of cushioning, stability, and portability, making it suitable for most beginners and everyday yoga practices. Choose around 5–6mm if you want extra cushioning without making the mat excessively thick or bulky.

Getting a thin or thick yoga mat is not just an issue of comfort and needs, but also a question of where you practice yoga. Thick mats are best for hard, concrete surfaces.

8–10mm+: Best for Extra Cushioning

8–10mm+: Best for Extra Cushioning

Go for a thicker mat if you prioritize cushioning for kneeling, stretching, and floor-based exercises, or if you find standard mats uncomfortable on your joints. Keep in mind that thicker mats are generally heavier and bulkier, and the softer surface can make balancing poses feel less stable.

Thick mats are best for anyone with physical concerns or undergoing therapy and recovery. These mats are well utilized in yoga therapy, which is an adaptation of yoga and is focused on integrating the mind, body, and spirit to help improve one's mental and physical concerns.

2

Check the Material for Grip and Stability

Check the Material for Grip and Stability

The mat's material determines how much grip you get, and grip is what keeps you from sliding out of a pose. Here's how the three most common options compare:

  • PVC — Durable, affordable, and easy to clean, making it a practical choice for beginners. It can provide good grip, although the surface may become less sticky with use.

  • Natural Rubber — Provides strong traction and good cushioning, making it suitable for users who prioritize stability. However, rubber mats are heavier and may have a noticeable smell when new. Avoid them if you have a latex allergy.

  • TPE — Lightweight, flexible, and easy to carry, making it suitable for classes and travel. Grip varies depending on the surface texture and construction.

Whichever material you pick, look for a textured or non-slip surface, check how it holds up when wet, and read buyer reviews to confirm it actually stays put during poses.

PVC mats are the best type if you are looking for a good grip. However, at some point, the mat loses its stickiness, which can lead to slipping and losing your balance.

3

Check the Mat Size and Weight

Check the Mat Size and Weight

Check the mat's dimensions before buying, especially if you're tall or prefer plenty of room to move. A standard mat is usually around 61 cm wide and 173–183 cm long. If you're taller, choose a mat that's at least 15–25 cm longer than your height so your head and feet can stay on the mat during floor poses.

For width, a standard 61-cm mat works for most users. Choose a wider mat of around 76 cm or more if you have a larger build or want more space for stretching and floor exercises. Also consider the mat's weight if you'll regularly carry it to classes or travel with it.

Michelle Estuar
Fitness Coach
Michelle Estuar

Always get a mat that is at least 7 to 10 inches longer than your height. As for the width, if you have broad shoulders or are on the heavier side, you might need a wider mat for more comfort.

To find a good width, lie down with your arms comfortably out and away from the sides of your body. Measure the width and add at least 2 to 3 inches. Newbies can benefit from a wider mat as well.

4

Opt for an Easy-to-Clean Yoga Mat

Opt for an Easy-to-Clean Yoga Mat

If you practice frequently or sweat heavily, choose a mat with a smooth, non-porous surface that's easy to wipe down. You can also look for listings that specifically mention moisture or odor resistance, but check the material and care instructions before buying.

Do your part in the upkeep too. Wipe the mat according to the manufacturer's cleaning instructions and allow it to dry completely before rolling it up. Avoid using harsh cleaners unless the manufacturer says they're safe, as some chemicals can damage the mat's surface and reduce its grip over time.

Michelle Estuar
Fitness Coach
Michelle Estuar
Whether synthetic or natural, biodegradable or not, yoga mats are prone to hosting bacteria and viruses. If you are using a mat from the gym or yoga center, make it a point to wipe down both sides of the mat with a wet cloth and dry it up with a dry cloth.

And even if your environment looks clean and you yourself do not sweat at all, make it a habit to find some time right after your session and clean your mat right away.

Frequently Asked Questions Answered by Fitness Coach Michelle Estuar

We asked Fitness Coach Michelle Estuar some of the web's most asked questions. Read below to know her answers!

Is Yoga Mat Same as Exercise Mat?

While yoga mats can be used as exercise mats, exercise mats are not suitable for yoga. Exercise mats may not have enough grip, but they do have smoother surfaces that are much easier to clean. These are built for high-intensity activities, even with shoes on.

Yoga mats, on the other hand, feature a sticky grip, a rough texture, and extra cushion to help you balance and hold positions without slipping. Overall, exercise mats are designed to withstand high-intensity activities even with your shoes on. Yoga mats are created to support low-impact exercises and are best used barefoot.

How Often Should I Clean My Yoga Mat?

Try to make it a habit to clean your mat after each session. Use a soft cloth to wipe the moisture and dirt away. Also avoid using baby wipes and disinfectants, as these can destroy the mats eventually.

Once a month, give it a deep cleaning. There's no need to hand wash. Simply leave it in a tub of water with a few drops of mild bath or dish soap, and let it soak for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse completely. Place a towel on top, and roll it together to remove excess water. You may either lay it flat on the ground or hang it to dry.

When to Replace Yoga Mat?

Here are some signs that will tell you to replace your mat as soon as possible:

・You slip easily.

・You get off balance in poses that you normally nail.

・There are some uneven parts in the mat.

・You are experiencing joint or foot pain after a session.

・It is starting to smell bad.
