How to Choose a Mechanical Keyboard – Buying Guide

Whether you're a competitive gamer or someone simply looking to upgrade your typing experience, navigating the world of mechanical keyboards can be overwhelming. To help, we've listed everything you need to know to find the ideal keyboard for your preferences in our buying guide below.

1

Choose the Switch Type Based on Your Typing Preference

The most important factor in choosing a mechanical keyboard is the type of switch. It represents the key's feel and the sound it makes when pressed. It is vital to choose the right switch for the right purpose. In this section, we're going to explain the differences between each type of mechanical keyboard switch, so you will know which one to purchase.

Red Switches Provide a Smooth Typing Experience

Red Switches Provide a Smooth Typing Experience

Linear switches provide a completely smooth keystroke with no tactile bump or audible click. They generally require less force to press, making them a popular choice for gaming and fast, repeated keystrokes. Red switches are a common example of linear switches, although the exact feel and actuation force can vary between brands.

Blue Switches Provide a Loud and Audible Click

Blue Switches Provide a Loud and Audible Click

Blue switches are a common type of clicky switch, producing a noticeable tactile bump and distinct clicking sound with each keypress. They provide clear physical and auditory feedback, which some users prefer for typing. However, their louder sound can be distracting in shared spaces or offices.

Brown Switches Provide Tactile Feedback Without a Loud Click

Brown Switches Provide Tactile Feedback Without a Loud Click

Brown switches are a common example of tactile switches, providing you with a middle-ground typing experience as they combine a noticeable tactile bump with quiet operation

They provide physical feedback at the actuation point without the loud, sharp click of blue switches or the frictionless slide of the red ones. This gives typists and gamers confident confirmation that a keystroke has registered, making them great for daily use.

2

Consider the Mechanical Keyboard Layout for Your Workspace

Consider the Mechanical Keyboard Layout for Your Workspace

Mechanical keyboards come in different layouts and sizes, which determine how many keys are included and how much desk space the keyboard occupies. Choose a layout based on whether you regularly use the number pad, function row, arrow keys, and navigation keys.

  • Full-Size (100%) & 96% Compact: Include a dedicated numpad, function row, arrow keys, and navigation keys

  • Tenkeyless (80% TKL): Removes the numpad while retaining the function row, arrow keys, and navigation keys

  • 75% & 65% Compact: Both remove the numpad; 75% retains the function row, while 65% removes it but keeps the arrow keys

  • 60% Ultra-Compact: Removes the numpad, arrow keys, and function row, which are accessed through secondary function layers

Full-size models suit frequent number entry, while TKL and smaller layouts save desk space. For the most compact setup, 60% models are popular among gamers.

3

Opt for a Connectivity Option That Ensures Convenience

Opt for a Connectivity Option That Ensures Convenience

Mechanical keyboards are available with wired, wireless, or tri-mode connectivity, giving you different options depending on your devices and how much flexibility you need.

  • Wired (USB-C): Offers a stable connection with very low latency and no battery charging.
  • Wireless (2.4GHz / Bluetooth): Reduces cable clutter and supports multi-device pairing, but requires charging. Bluetooth may also have slightly higher latency
  • Tri-Mode (USB-C / 2.4GHz / Bluetooth): Offers the most flexibility for gaming, work, and charging, but usually costs more

Choose a wired build for competitive gaming, or select wireless and tri-mode models for a clean, portable setup across multiple devices.

4

Pick a Keyboard That's Compatible with Your Device

Pick a Keyboard That's Compatible with Your Device

Before you buy a new mechanical keyboard, check first if it offers native system compatibility with the specific devices and operating systems you rely on daily. Selecting a compatible keyboard, regardless of whether you plan to connect it to a MacBook, a desktop PC, or a laptop running Windows, can ensure all keys, media controls, and shortcuts work seamlessly right away.

Fortunately, modern models support universal plug-and-play across Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS through dual system modes or physical switch toggles. Take note that certain models may feature platform-specific key layouts or modified modifier keys. This is why you must always check the listed OS requirements to avoid typing conflicts or non-responsive functions.

5

Look for Features That Improve Durability and Customization

Look for Features That Improve Durability and Customization

Beyond the basic specifications, certain features can make a mechanical keyboard easier to customize, maintain, and use for years. Check the product listing for these features:

  • PBT Keycaps: Generally more resistant to shine and wear than ABS keycaps, making them a good choice for frequent typing

  • Hot-Swappable Switches: Let you replace compatible switches without soldering, making it easier to customize the typing feel or replace faulty switches

  • Programmable Keys and Macros: Allow you to remap keys or create shortcuts for gaming and productivity

  • RGB Backlighting: Provides customizable lighting and can make the keys easier to see in dim environments

  • Durable Build: Materials such as aluminum can provide a more solid feel, while features like adjustable feet can improve typing comfort

Going for a build with durable materials, hot-swap flexibility, and solid software support ensures your investment remains adaptable and comfortable over years of daily typing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some of the most-asked questions on the web, answered by the mybest team.

How Often Should I Clean My Mechanical Keyboard?

To prevent the build-up of dust, dirt, and germs, you should give your mechanical keyboard a light cleaning or a quick wipe-down at least once a week. You can do this by wiping the surface of your keyboard using disinfectant wipes or a microfiber towel with isopropyl alcohol.

Also, to remove hair particles, crumbs, and dust under the keycaps, give your mechanical keyboard a deep clean once a month - gently remove, wash, and dry the keycaps; clean the switches using cotton swabs or compressed air, and reassemble your keyboard.

How to Remove Mechanical Keyboard Keys?

While you can use your fingers to remove keycaps, it's better to use a keycap puller to speed up the process. Insert or slide the keycap puller over the keycaps until it snaps underneath the key. Gently pull the keycap until it comes off, and repeat the process for the rest of the keys. Note that larger keys are tougher to remove, so pull one side first, then the other.

If you don't have a keycap puller and you don't want to use fingers, you can make an improvised keycap puller using a paper clip as an alternative. Straighten it and bend both ends into an L shape. Lastly, bend the ends inward so that they can hook under a key, just like a keycap puller.

Are Mechanical Keyboard Keycaps Universal?

Mechanical keyboard keycaps differ in shape and size, so they're not universal for different keyboards. If you're planning to customize your keycaps, check your keyboard's layout and switch. Also, determine your current keycaps' stem, profile, and thickness to ensure that your desired keycaps are compatible with your mechanical keyboard.
