When it comes to one's skincare routine, the area around the eyes is sometimes overlooked, even though it needs the most attention due to its thin and delicate layers. Fortunately, eye creams are widely available in the market to combat various under-eye problems, such as puffiness, dryness, dark spots, eye bags, and even early signs of skin aging.
Even though they may appear pricier than regular creams, they absolutely work wonders for the skin. If you are planning to purchase an eye cream formula to fight your skin woes, we offer you a list of pointers to consider before buying one. We even asked for some of the comments and tips of a board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Aznaida L. Tawagon-Pandapatan!

If you're wondering whether or not you need eye cream, Dr. Aznaida says it depends on your skin concerns. If you don't have any specific eye concerns, you can apply your usual face moisturizer under the eyes.
However, if you have particular skin concerns that your regular face moisturizer cannot address, then eye creams may be beneficial for you. For example, you can use eye creams with retinol to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Meanwhile, eye creams with brightening ingredients can address hyperpigmentation. We'll discussed these in detail in our buying guide below!
In general, eye creams are made to target issues that you have on your eye area only, which the rest of your face does not have. Common ones are puffiness, hyperpigmentation, and superficial fine lines.
For example, if you do not have hyperpigmentation on your cheeks, but you have dark undereye circles, you can opt for an eye cream with brightening ingredients (such as arbutin and licorice) and a face moisturizer that has none of those specific ingredients.
The right eye cream can work wonders to address various skin concerns like puffiness, dark circles, dryness, and signs of aging. Know how to select the best one for you by reading our pointers below!
Different skin concerns require different eye cream formulas to combat the problem. Assess your under-eye skin condition first to help you decide on the best formula that will address your needs.
Fatigue, dehydration, stress, and puyat are just some of the reasons why eyes appear puffy or droopy. If de-puffing is your concern, opt for an eye cream that contains caffeine. This ingredient is a vasoconstrictor, which means that it constricts blood vessels, reducing blood flow to the under-eye area.
This results in a decrease in puffiness and irritation around the eyes. Aside from caffeine, board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Aznaida recommends anti-inflammatory ingredients like green tea, niacinamide, and peptides to target puffiness.
Caffeine has good reviews to combat eye puffiness. However, it is best to know the cause of the puffiness prior to using eye creams.
The common causes of eye puffiness are genetics, allergies, not getting enough sleep, and water retention from a diet high in salt. If genetics is the causative factor, botox and surgery are your best bet. For allergies, consult an allergologist or ophthalmologist for the proper medications.
If dark circles around the eyes are your concern, an eye cream with niacinamide, kojic acid, and arbutin may help combat hyperpigmentation. These ingredients can lighten under-eye dark circles by slowing down the cells that produce melanin.
Vitamin C is another component rich in antioxidants that strengthen and stimulate the skin barrier, making the skin appear brighter. However, if you have sensitive skin, Vitamin E is a great alternative. This antioxidant can fade dark circles while reducing wrinkles. Another ingredient that is great for brightening is licorice extract.
If dark circles are your main concern, it is also best to know the cause first before using brightening agents. Common causes of dark circles include genetics, UV exposure, superficial location of the vasculature, and thin skin overlying the orbicularis oculi muscle, among others.
Management for some of these includes sunscreen, surgery, fillers, autologous fat transfers, laser, and eye creams with mild brighteners like low percentages of arbutin, kojic acid, niacinamide, and Vitamin C.
If wrinkles, fine lines, and other signs of aging are your concerns, an eye cream with retinol is your best bet. Retinol is a superior ingredient that helps speed up skin cell renewal. However, it's important to start with a lower concentration (0.2%) before working your way up (1%). Another thing to note is that retinol cannot be mixed with AHAs and BHAs to prevent irritation.
One of the main causes of wrinkles is the lack of moisture in the skin, so bear in mind that to prevent wrinkles, moisturization is important. To hydrate your under-eye area, you can also look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, snail mucin, ceramides, glycerin, squalene, and shea butter. These retain moisture, making the skin supple and youthful-looking.
Apart from the components of the eye cream, it is equally essential to avoid harsh ingredients. Some of these are parabens, phthalates, and fragrances. This is especially important if you have sensitive skin. These ingredients can negatively affect your health by disrupting hormonal balance, irritating the skin, and more.
According to Dr. Aznaida, another ingredient to avoid is essential oils, which can cause allergic contact dermatitis in the eye area. Harsh formulas that contain these substances are even more dangerous for eye creams. Because you apply them to thin and sensitive skin, they get absorbed more quickly.
Since the skin over the eyes is thinner and has less subcutaneous tissue layer, it is more sensitive than the rest of the face. Due to this, even those with resilient skin who can normally tolerate fragrances and other harsh ingredients on their face could be sensitive to the same ingredients if applied to their eye areas.
It is, therefore, advisable to avoid applying harsh ingredients to these areas. Ingredients to avoid include glycolic acid, salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, high-percentage retinoids, and fragrances, among others. Remember, the eye cream shouldn't make your skin itchy or irritated and should suit your skin type.

Apply eye cream with clean hands (wash your hands first); ideally, use the ring finger. You may use other fingers, but the ring finger is known to exert the least pressure on the eye area. This is why it is better to use it when applying the product.
Also, if the eye cream is in a jar, use a disposable spatula or cotton buds to get the right amount of product instead of dipping your fingers in the jar. This is to avoid introducing harmful bacteria and fungi into your product.
It is best applied after your face toner and moisturizer. Also, some tipsーtake note that brightening eye creams are okay to use daily. But for eye creams with retinol, start 3x a week for a month. If there are no adverse effects on the skin, you may apply them every night.
In general, the best way to prevent wrinkles and other signs of aging is to get enough sleep, exercise, have a well-balanced diet, avoid too much UV exposure, and wear sunscreen! Of course, better skin will also be achieved with the proper use of skincare products.
Applying eye cream is just one way to maintain supple and youthful skin. There are other kinds of skincare essentials that can make your skin look younger and healthier. Check our list of recommended products below for a forever-young glow.
