Benefits of Vitamin C Serums

Benefits of Vitamin C Serums

Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that protects the skin from free radicals that can damage skin cells and cause premature aging. It shields skin from sun damage, including wrinkles, dark spots, and rough texture.

Vitamin C increases collagen production to improve elasticity and texture. It also inhibits tyrosinase to fade hyperpigmentation and brighten overall skin tone.

Vitamin C Interaction Warning: Do Not Mix Vitamin C With Exfoliating Acids and Retinol

Vitamin C Interaction Warning: Do Not Mix Vitamin C With Exfoliating Acids and Retinol

It's important to avoid combining vitamin C with other exfoliating acids like AHAs, BHAs, and retinoids. These combinations can lead to increased skin sensitivity, stinging, irritation, and potential breakdown of the skin barrier.

If you're keen on incorporating AHAs, BHAs, and retinoids with vitamin C, consider using them at different times of the day. For instance, opt for an AHA or BHA cleanser instead of a toner to ensure complete removal before applying vitamin C. Alternatively, apply vitamin C in the morning and your retinoid at night to prevent their interaction. This way, you can enjoy the benefits of each active ingredient without risking unwanted side effects.

Remember to follow up with a moisturizer to seal the serum into your skin. If used in the morning, apply sunscreen, as vitamin C can heighten skin sensitivity to sunlight.

How to Choose a Vitamin C Serum - Buying Guide

Everyone can use vitamin C, but the appropriate concentration, type, and timing for initiation are important to make it work. Learn more about these considerations below.

1

Ensure Effectivity by Checking the Form and Concentration

One of the most important factors that determine how your vitamin C serum will work is the type of vitamin C in your serum and the concentration. Although 10-20% L-ascorbic acid is deemed the most effective type, not everyone may benefit from it.

Look for L-Ascorbic Acid

Look for L-Ascorbic Acid

Vitamin C in skincare products comes in two forms: active and inactive. The only active and readily bioavailable form is L-ascorbic acid. According to Dr. Krizia Ty, L-ascorbic acid is the most potent and effective as it works immediately upon application to the skin. However, one downside is that it is unstable, so it oxidizes, degrades, and loses efficacy quickly. This may also cause stinging, redness, dryness, or irritation when used in high concentrations, especially for sensitive skin.

Meanwhile, inactive forms are deemed more stable. They are effective, but compared to L-ascorbic, it may take a little longer for them to work. Some examples of inactive vitamin C form include sodium ascorbyl phosphate, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, ascorbyl palmitate, ascorbyl glucoside, amino ascorbyl phosphate, 3-o-ethyl ascorbic acid, and tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate.

Reach for 10% First, Then Gradually Increase It to No More Than 20%

Reach for 10% First, Then Gradually Increase It to No More Than 20%

If you’re a first-time user, it is best to start with a 10% concentration and then gradually increase it up to 20% as long as your skin can tolerate it. If you have mature skin, it’s also it's preferable to use 20% of L-ascorbic acid to maximize its collagen-building, antioxidant, and anti-pigmentation benefits.

Dermatologist Dr. Krizia Ty states that at higher concentrations, the risk of getting irritation, purging/breakouts, or itchiness is also higher, so it's best to not go overboard and remember to listen to your skin

Dr. Krizia Ty
DermatologistDr. Krizia Ty

Avoid vitamin C products that have less than 10% concentration of L-ascorbic acid as this might not be as effective. Take note that higher does not necessarily mean better. Also, anything higher than 20% L-ascorbic acid could be too irritating and will not provide any additional benefit.

2

Take Your Skin Type Into Consideration: L-Ascorbic Acid May Be Too Potent for Your Skin

Take Your Skin Type Into Consideration: L-Ascorbic Acid May Be Too Potent for Your Skin
Although L-ascorbic acid is the most effective vitamin C type, some skin types may be better off with inactive forms to ensure minimal risk of irritation.

  • For oily and acne-prone skin - opt for sodium ascorbyl phosphate at 1-5%. Sodium ascorbyl phosphate has a higher pH of 7, which is closer to the normal skin pH, making it less irritating. It also boasts anti-bacterial properties against acne-causing bacteria.
  • For sensitive skin - go for 3-o-ethyl ascorbic acid at 0.5-5%, which is both water and oil-soluble. This is more stable but still potent enough to provide the same effects as L-ascorbic acid, even at lower concentrations. Another option is tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, which is more oil-soluble. These forms of vitamin C also have a higher pH closer to the normal skin pH of 5-7, so it's less irritating.
  • For dry skin - although L-ascorbic is permitted, you may also opt to use any of the inactive forms of vitamin C at 1-5% concentration since those have a lower irritation potential.
Dr. Krizia Ty
DermatologistDr. Krizia Ty
Skincare isn’t a one-size-fits-all thing. This is also why patch testing is recommended to know how your skin will react.
3

See if the Serum Contains Other Ingredients that Complement Vitamin C’s Effects

Although vitamin C alone is proven to be beneficial, adding it with other ingredients makes the formula more potent and powerful.

Get a More Stable Formula and Potent Antioxidant Combination With Vitamin C Serums Infused With Vitamin E and Ferulic Acid

Get a More Stable Formula and Potent Antioxidant Combination With Vitamin C Serums Infused With Vitamin E and Ferulic Acid
Both vitamin E and ferulic acid are known for their antioxidant properties. These, combined with vitamin C, can provide a synergistic effect in preventing UV light-induced damage from sun exposure. Additionally, the addition of vitamin E and ferulic acid also makes the formula more stable.

Address Hyperpigmentation and Control Oil With Niacinamide

Address Hyperpigmentation and Control Oil With Niacinamide

Niacinamide is considered one of the best ingredients, as it's gentle and brings benefits like skin barrier repair, lightening of dark marks or hyperpigmentation, plus it can also help control oil. When paired with vitamin C, the skin-brightening effect is amplified.

Get Extra Hydration and Improve the Appearance of Fine Lines With Hyaluronic Acid, Peptides, and Ceramides

Get Extra Hydration and Improve the Appearance of Fine Lines With Hyaluronic Acid, Peptides, and Ceramides

To amp up the anti-aging benefits of vitamin C, you may look for serums with hyaluronic acid, peptides, and ceramides. These ingredients can fortify the skin and provide extra hydration, making skin look plumper with less visible fine lines.

4

Choose Vitamin C Serums in Dark Bottles and Airtight Packaging

Choose Vitamin C Serums in Dark Bottles and Airtight Packaging

The main drawback of vitamin C is that it is highly unstable. When exposed to light, heat, metal ions, or changes in pH, vitamin C rapidly oxidizes. This oxidation causes vitamin C to turn a brassy brown color and lose its effectiveness.

To prevent this, prefer vitamin C serums that are packed in darkly tinted or opaque bottles or those in airtight packaging like pumps or droppers to limit air exposure and oxidation. Additionally, buying smaller quantities can also reduce waste from oxidation.
