Antibacterial and Antifungal Soap With Tea Tree Oil and Bio Sulfur
Antifungal soaps effectively combat minor and common fungal infections, such as athlete's foot (alipunga), ringworm (buni), and jock itch (hadhad), given that they're still in their early stages. The soap destroys the fungi and further inhibits fungal growth to counter the spreading, which is brought about mainly by sweat, poor nutrition, and hygiene - or the lack thereof.
However, note that a fungal infection's responsiveness to antifungal soaps may vary due to the differing nature and location. For instance, infected skin (e.g., Tinea Versicolor) may be more responsive than infected hair or nails (e.g., Tinea Capitis, Onychomycosis, respectively).
There are a few key factors to consider when buying an antifungal soap to make sure it can address your specific skin concern. Aside from the ingredient it contains, you should also pay attention to its formula and the quality tests it has undergone to ensure your safety.
When it comes to choosing an antifungal soap, the key lies in its active ingredients. Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Rona Abad-Constantino recommends looking for soap that contains antifungal agents under the drug classes Azoles, Polyenes, and Allylamines. These powerful drug classes are known for their effectiveness in treating common fungal infections.
Polyenes are another major group of antifungal agents. These antifungal agents attach to ergosterol and create holes in it, weakening the fungal cell and causing it to fall apart, which kills the fungus. Nystatin is under this antifungal drug class.
It is effective against various infections caused by yeast-like fungi of the Candida species; this includes Candida-caused diaper rash, intertrigo, or seborrheic dermatitis caused by yeast overgrowth. Nystatin is also fungicidal, so it actively kills the fungal cells rather than merely slowing their growth.
Terbinafine is effective against several fungal infections of the skin, hair, and nails, particularly those caused by dermatophyte fungi. It is commonly used to treat athlete's foot (alipunga), ringworm (buni), jock itch (hadhad), and nail fungus.
Take note that when one has a fungal infection, the main goal is treating the infection. If one wants to use an antifungal soap but has sensitive or dry skin, the use of emollients immediately after bathing is recommended. This ensures that the skin stays moisturized and avoids irritation as well. If irritation is persistent and/or severe, consider another form of treatment.
Aside from targeting fungi, choosing an antifungal soap with a pH level that closely matches the skin's natural pH is also essential. The skin's pH level typically ranges from 4 to 6, which is weakly acidic.
And according to board-certified dermatologist Dr. Rona Constantino, an increased pH causes irritability and dryness of the skin, as well as some alteration in the normal bacterial flora. Hence, your best bet is to use soap with a similar pH level to help maintain the skin's protective barrier against harmful microorganisms and moisture loss.
When choosing a cleanser, choosing a product near the skin's pH is ideal. But disclosure of a cleanser's pH is not a common practice in the industry, unfortunately.
In any type of product, it is difficult to pinpoint a specific substance that may cause irritation. There are a number of possible irritants in soap, including fragrance and foaming agents (e.g. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate). The antifungal ingredient itself can cause irritation. So when signs of irritation appear, it is wise to discontinue using the product or consult a dermatologist or allergologist for investigation. Note that this applies to any body part.
With many options readily available online, it is tempting to go for the most affordable one you can purchase. However, this isn't a wise decision. When it comes to antifungal soaps, especially medicated ones, it's best to go for FDA-approved products.
This way, you can be assured of their quality as well as your safety since they went through proper testing. Aside from that, doing your research online about the brand and double-checking reviews are important.
If the antifungal soap contains medications, having FDA approval is a good indicator that the product went through proper and adequate testing that proves its efficacy and safety.

With antifungal soaps, there is always the possibility of irritation and allergic reactions. Aside from containing several possible irritants and foaming agents, its active ingredient can cause irritation, dryness, and itching. Reactions can also arise depending on your skin type.
Unlike other body products that you can buy tailored to your skin type, the main goal of antifungal soaps is to treat the infection, so you can't rely on them for moisturizing or other benefits. With all these possible side effects, it is best to practice caution and avoid self-medication as much as possible. Also, do not hesitate to consult a board-certified dermatologist.
There is definitely the possibility of irritation and allergic reactions. Not necessarily from the combination of different products, but it may happen even when a product is used alone. It has been documented that some antifungal agents may cause contact dermatitis. That said, do practice caution and avoid self-medication as much as possible.

There are classic signs and symptoms that point to a fungal infection, such as round, scaly lesions that gradually increase in size or in number. But there are times that these classic features are absent because there are various types of fungal infections with different skin manifestations.
If the classic features are not there, but there is a high index suspicion, diagnostic tests may be prescribed for you. Your doctor may order a Potassium Hydroxide Test (KOH) or a skin punch biopsy to ensure the diagnosis.
Non-progression of the skin lesion/s, and improvement or resolution of the symptoms such as scaling. One should wait until the course of treatment is done before judging its effectiveness. The specific course of treatment depends on the type of infection, and one should be assessed by a dermatologist for proper guidance.
If one uses any antifungal for a very long time, it is possible that the fungi may develop resistance, making it ineffective in treating the infection. The duration of medication use should be as advised by your doctor.
To prevent fungal infections, it's important to keep your skin dry. Because moist skin is prone to maceration, which facilitates fungi invasion. Thoroughly drying your skin, wearing breathable clothing & footwear, and applying antifungal or absorbent powders will make it harder for fungi to thrive.
It is also best to keep your hygiene products, grooming tools, and accessories (e.g. soaps, towels, brushes, barber and nail salon instruments, hats, footwear) strictly for personal use, and avoid going barefoot in public showers. Direct contact with the skin lesions of someone who has a fungal infection should also be avoided.
Up your cleansing and spot-treatment routines and say bye-bye to what's causing your skin the most booboo using these products!
