There is a long list of complicated factors that can affect hair growth and cause alopecia, the technical term for hair loss, which has many forms and varies in severity.
We have heard and read that genetics, stress, hormonal changes, medications, and bad hair care habits are the most common causes of hair loss. Some new and lactating mothers can also experience temporary hair loss.
Hair loss can be due to many possible causes. Genetics plays a role in male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) and female pattern baldness. Aside from genes, autoimmune conditions, hormonal imbalance, and nutritional deficiency are possible causes of hair loss.
Stress and improper hair care habits can also contribute to this condition. It is also important to differentiate if one is experiencing hair loss or increased hair fall (hair shedding). It is best to seek consultation with a board-certified dermatologist to have proper evaluation and management.
Your hair deserves to be pampered and protected. So when it comes to choosing the right hair strengthening oils, it's important to keep a few key factors in mind. It pays to read the label, as the list of ingredients can either make or break a good hair day. Let's take a closer look at these essential elements.
Although both are used as hair oils, the two have some key differences. For instance, essential oils are extracted from the leaves, barks, and roots of the plant while carrier oils are obtained from the seeds, nuts, or kernels of the plant.
As a result, the former is more potent and aromatic and has a lighter consistency. Some examples are lavender oil, lemongrass oil, rosemary oil, moringa oil. Since essential oils are highly concentrated, you'll only need a few drops for each use.
On the other hand, carrier oils that have a heavier consistency are used to dilute essential oils so that they can be safely applied to the hair and body. A few of the most common ones include coconut oil, jojoba oil, and grapeseed oil.
Carrier oils are usually used as a vehicle to deliver essential oils. They aim to dilute the concentrated nature of essential oils. With this dilution, it can help lessen the potential of irritaiton from essential oil.
When using hair oils, it's important to remember that natural does not mean safe. It is best to know if your hair needs it or not. Also, patch test first before applying it to your hair.
Out of desperation, you might be tempted to try almost anything and everything that promises great results. But first, do thorough research before trying out any product. One ineffective product after another can cause you time and money, or even worsen your dilemma. However, you can check these natural ingredients that promote healthier hair.
Rosemary is loved by many because of its aroma and calming properties. Besides increasing hair thickness and growth, it also promotes cell regeneration and improves circulation to strengthen the hair follicles.
For best results, dilute a few drops of rosemary oil in a carrier oil such as coconut or jojoba oil, massage it onto your scalp, and let it sit for about 10 minutes. Then, rinse off.
Rosemary oil may help male or female pattern hair loss. In a 2013 study done on mice with testosterone-related hair loss, rosemary oil was shown to regrow their hair. The possible hypothesized mechanism is the ability of rosemary oil to prevent dihydrotestosterone from binding to hormone receptors. This leads to decreased testosterone activity, enabling it to attack the hair follicles.
A 2015 study (Panahi, Y., et al.) showed that rosemary oil resulted in an increase in hair growth in male pattern baldness. This study suggests that rosemary oil may promote hair growth but only in the long term. Though currently available trials show benefits, more long-term studies on human must still be done.
Grapeseed oil helps reduce hair loss and has excellent moisturizing and nourishing properties because of its omega-6 fatty acid content. Since this ingredient helps strengthen the hair follicles, it's recommended for those who have dry and brittle hair.
It can also be great in fighting dandruff, as it adds moisture to the scalp, thereby soothing dryness and flakiness. Because it has a lightweight consistency, it doesn't feel greasy or heavy when applied.
Grapeseed oil is rich in phenols, fatty acids, and vitamins. It is said to have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. These can be due to grapeseed oil constituents, mainly tocopherol, linolenic acid, resveratrol, carotenoids, and phytosterols. For use in hair growth, it may improve scalp blood flow that increases hair strength to prevent hair loss. However, further clinical trials in humans are still needed.
Castor oil penetrates the skin quickly, making your hair smooth, shiny, and healthy. Its fatty acid content, including ricinoleic acid, reduces the occurrence of dry hair, split ends, and thinning hair, which then paves the way for hair growth and strengthening.
To get the best results, experts recommend choosing an organic, cold-pressed castor oil since it has more nutrients compared to regular oils. They also suggest doing a patch test first to determine if this type of oil is compatible with your hair type.
Castor oil, also known as Ricinus communis, is a vegetable oil. Castor oil can help add moisture to the hair shaft. This lessens friction and may strengthen the hair. However, there are currently no studies showing it can promote hair growth. It can give conditioning that improves the flexibility of the hair fiber.
When applied to the scalp, it can increase the flow of oxygen-rich and nutrient-rich blood to the hair follicle, the dermal papilla. WIth nutrients, it helps strengthen the hair. Still, it is worth noting that studies showing that it promotes hair growth are still lacking.
If you want to achieve strong and silky hair, go for olive oil. This emollient helps retain moisture in your locks and contains antioxidants that promote a healthier scalp. Thus, it can restore damaged and frizzy hair.
It is also useful for treating dandruff and brings back the natural oil balance in your hair. To use, apply a few drops of olive oil on your palm, massage it on the dry areas of your hair or scalp, leave it on for a few minutes, and rinse.
Olive oil seals moisture into the hair fiber, which helps with elasticity and lessens hair damage. A study (Tong, et al., 2015) showed that there is a component of olive oil called oleuropein that can directly impact the growth cycle, but that study was done on mice. Again, no clinical trials on people are available at the moment.
Locally known as malunggay, this common backyard vegetable offers a wide range of health benefits. For one, it has natural anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, analgesic, and antioxidant properties. It is also a rich source of calcium, iron, phosphorus, and vitamins A, B, and C.
Moringa oil has exceptional cosmetic value and is used in hair and body as a moisturizer and conditioner. It also strengthens the hair follicles and repairs split ends. To get the maximum benefits from this oil, remember to select an organic, cold-pressed variant and dilute it with a carrier oil before applying it to your hair.
The leaves of Moringa Oleifera are rich in vitamins, amino acids, iron, and antioxidants. These can help tissue generation and strengthen hair formation. A study with the use of moringa on promoting hair growth was made on mice (Builder, P. et al.,2014). However, evidence with trials on humans is currently not available.
Apart from its antiseptic and antioxidant properties, ginger promotes blood circulation in the scalp which aids in hair growth. This ingredient also relieves dandruff and other scalp infections and strengthens and conditions the hair.
Meanwhile, aloe vera is one of the best and known ingredients in terms of hair care and aiding healthy hair growth. It is a great hydrating agent that strengthens the hair and protects it from damage and frizz, thanks to its vitamin A, C, E, and B12 content.
Ginger and aloe vera are known antioxidants that can protect the hair from inflammation and external stressors. This can in turn promote hair strength. However, an increase in hair growth is still not evident.
Hair strengthening oils are primarily made with potent essential oils. Thus, opt for hair grower oils that are stored in dark glass bottles to preserve their efficacy and prevent UV light from speeding up their deterioration.
Pick brands that have safe, airtight, and leak-proof containers with a squeezable dropper for easy and sanitary use. This allows you to massage your scalp and hair generously without any mess.
There are also those that have pumps or sprays which make applying the oil more convenient. They also come in a bigger size, ideal if you've already tried the product before. However, we recommend storing the oils in a cool, dark, and dry place to prolong their shelf life.

To manage hair thinning, it is important to know the cause and trigger. Proper hair care is also essential. Here are some hair care tips:
Before you purchase and use hair strengthening oils, read our questions and answer section down below for more information. Dr. Jarische answers some of the most asked questions online.
Hair oil can be applied when your hair is damp (a little wet) or dry. Make sure that the scalp is clean before applying it. Some trichologists suggest warming the oil so that the liquefied formula can sink in better.
The amount of oil you need depends on the type of oil. Your hair length and texture also matters. For colored or chemically-treated hair, adding more may be needed to bring back the moisture of the hair strands. Apply just the right amount. If too much is applied, it can make the hair look greasy and may promote the formation of dandruff.
The need for hair oil depends on your hair texture. If it is dry, it can give hair a nice, natural shine. It coats the hair strands and makes them smoother. On the other hand, people with fine, straight hair may not need to add hair oils because their scalp is producing enough natural oils.
