How to Choose a Gaming Smartphone – Buying Guide
With the variety of gaming phone brands in the Philippines now available, finding the right phone can be a game-changer for your experience. Here's a comprehensive guide on what to look for when choosing the best gaming phone for you.
Prioritize Processing Power and RAM: At Least 8 GB for Beginners and 128 GB for Serious Gamers
Processing power is the most important aspect, so you never need to worry about your phone falling behind on all of the action or potential crashes during long gaming sessions.
it comes to gaming, performance is key. Look for phones equipped with mid-range processors like the Snapdragon 700 series or MediaTek Dimensity series, which offer a good balance between cost and capability. A minimum of 8 GB RAM is essential for lag-free gaming, but if your budget allows, consider phones with 12 GB RAM for better multitasking and smoother gameplay.
A solid CPU-GPU combination ensures that demanding games run efficiently, preventing lag during critical moments. Multi-core processors and optimized GPUs allow you to game, browse, and stream without hiccups, ensuring a seamless experience.
More RAM allows for running higher-quality games and multiple apps or programs in the background simultaneously.
Prioritize Battery Life: Aim for a Minimum of 4,000 mAh for All-Day Use
4,000 mAh battery offers sufficient power for moderate gaming and general use without frequent recharges.
A 4,000 mAh battery is the minimum standard for gaming phones, especially for those who game between classes or during breaks. Look for phones with 5,000 mAh or higher for extended use, ensuring you don’t run out of power during crucial gaming sessions.
Fast-charging capabilities are a must-have, allowing you to quickly recharge during breaks. Some budget-friendly options even offer power-saving modes to extend battery life, which is perfect for those long gaming marathons.
Evaluate Storage Options: 64 GB for Casual Gamers, 128 GB or More for Avid Players
If you know you'll only be focusing on one or a couple of games, 64 GB would probably be plenty of space. But if you like to dabble in multiple games, apps, genres, etc., then you may want that extra space.
Storage is another critical factor, particularly for those who download multiple apps and need space for personal files. 64 GB of internal storage is sufficient for casual gamers who play a few select games. However, if you plan to download large titles, 128 GB or more is recommended.
If expandable storage is important to you, ensure the phone supports microSD cards. However, keep in mind that internal storage is faster and more reliable since external storage can lead to potential data corruption and slower performance.
Consider Display Quality and Frame Rate
When choosing a gaming phone, consider both resolution and frame rate capabilities. Some games allow you to adjust these settings, so a phone that can handle higher specs gives you more flexibility in balancing visual quality and performance based on your preferences and the specific game requirements.
Display Resolution: 720p for Casual Gamers, 1080p for Competitive Play
This ensures clear and sharp visuals not just for gaming, but it’s also perfect for watching videos.
The display resolution of a gaming phone significantly impacts the visual quality of your gaming experience. For casual gamers, a minimum resolution of 720p is acceptable and can still provide enjoyable gameplay.
However, if you're into competitive gaming or prefer higher-quality graphics, aim for at least 1080p resolution. For the best visual experience, consider phones with HD or 4K displays, which offer superior clarity and detail, especially beneficial for graphically intensive games.
Frame Rate and Refresh Rate: At Least 30 FPS and 90 Hz for Smooth Gameplay
A high frame and refresh ensures every action during gameplay is smooth and looks and feels fluid. Anything under could be pixelated and laggy.
Frame rate and refresh rate work together to provide smooth gameplay. A minimum of 30 FPS (frames per second) is recommended for both casual and hardcore gamers. Anything below 30 FPS can result in choppy, pixelated gameplay that's not visually appealing. For a smoother experience, especially in fast-paced games, aim for 60 FPS or higher.
Many gaming phones now offer high refresh rate displays, such as 90 Hz or 120 Hz. These higher refresh rates complement higher frame rates, making gameplay feel more responsive and reducing motion blur. This is particularly beneficial in competitive gaming scenarios where quick reactions are crucial.
Look for Gaming-Specific Features: Choose Phones with Customizable Modes and Extra Controls
This can significantly enhance your gaming experience, giving you a competitive edge and making gameplay more comfortable.
Many modern gaming phones come equipped with customizable gaming modes that optimize performance by prioritizing resources for gaming applications. For instance, the ASUS ROG Phone 6 includes a Game Genie feature that allows users to manage notifications, adjust performance settings, and even record gameplay seamlessly.
Additionally, consider phones that offer extra physical controls or accessories. Devices like the Xiaomi Black Shark 5 Pro feature customizable shoulder triggers that can be mapped to in-game actions, providing quicker response times during critical moments. Other options include attachable gamepads or grips, which enhance comfort during long gaming sessions and improve control precision.
Invest in Phones With Advanced Cooling Systems
Keeping your phone cooled is super important so you don't burn out any components in your gaming phone.
Effective heat management is critical during extended gaming sessions. Overheating can lead to performance throttling and, in severe cases, damage to internal components. Look for phones that incorporate advanced cooling technologies, such as vapor chambers or liquid cooling systems.
Additionally, ensure that the phone's vents are unobstructed during gameplay, and consider gaming in a well-ventilated area. Taking regular breaks can also help prevent overheating, allowing the device to cool down and maintain optimal performance.
Occasionally, you'll want to shut down your phone and leave it off the charger to give the device the cooling time it needs.
Consider Audio Quality: Look for Stereo Speakers and High-Quality Audio Support
Good audio quality enhances the gaming experience, allowing you to hear subtle in-game sounds and communicate effectively with teammates.
Look for gaming phones equipped with stereo speakers that provide clear and balanced sound. High-quality audio can enhance gameplay by allowing you to hear critical in-game sounds, such as footsteps or environmental cues, which can give you a competitive edge.
Additionally, phones that support advanced audio technologies, such as Dolby Atmos or Hi-Res Audio, can significantly improve sound quality. If you prefer using headphones, ensure the phone has a good-quality headphone jack or supports high-quality Bluetooth audio codecs for wireless gaming.
Prioritize Reputable Brands to Make the Best Out of Your Purchase
Reputable brands are known for their quality, ensuring your phone stays functional for years.
Brands like ASUS and Samsung are known for their commitment to quality and performance in gaming devices. ASUS, in particular, offers a range of options across different price points, catering to both casual and hardcore gamers. Meanwhile, if you're looking for budget-friendly options, consider Xiaomi, Realme, and POCO.
When considering a purchase, research user reviews, and expert opinions to ensure the device meets your specific gaming needs. Avoid lesser-known brands without substantial feedback, as they may not deliver the performance or reliability expected in a gaming phone.
