How to Choose Dog Treats – Buying Guide

Here are some key points to consider:

  1. Select the type of treat based on your dog's needs and preferences.
  2. For puppies and senior dogs, choose soft, bite-sized, and nutrient-rich treats.
  3. Get treats that are made from high-quality, whole-food ingredients to keep your dog healthy.
  4. Steer clear of these types of food to prevent health issues.
  5. When choosing treats, take note of your dog's diet and allergies.

For more detailed information, read through our buying guide below.

1

Select the Type of Treat Based on Your Dog's Needs and Preferences

With the many available dog treats in the market, it can be difficult to choose the best type for your pet. However, you can narrow down your options by taking into account your dog's breed, size, and age. Below are some of the most common types of dog treats that you can purchase online.

Crunchy Treats Are Great for Snacking

Crunchy Treats Are Great for Snacking

Crunchy treats come in the form of bars, kibbles, cookies, and biscuits, to name a few. Since they have low moisture content, they are more suitable for adult dogs. They can be given as a daily reward for your dog or even as a light snack on the go!

Chewy Treats Are Best for Young and Old Dogs

Chewy Treats Are Best for Young and Old Dogs

Due to their soft texture and high moisture content, chewy treats are best for puppies and senior dogs. They can also be used for training your pet because you can easily break them into smaller pieces. However, some chewy treats also come in cube form, which makes them easier to feed to your dog.

Freeze-Dried Treats Are Packed With Essential Nutrients

Freeze-Dried Treats Are Packed With Essential Nutrients

Looking for a healthier alternative? Try freeze-dried treats! This type of dog treat is made from all-natural ingredients with little to no preservatives, making it a great snack for your pup. Also, this method retains the nutrients and flavor of the food, so your fur baby can enjoy a healthy yet delicious treat. Best of all, you can choose from different flavors, from fruits and veggies to meaty ones!

Jerky Is Protein-Rich and Tasty

Jerky Is Protein-Rich and Tasty

Jerky, a type of dehydrated meat, is usually made from chicken, beef, and lamb. Thus, it is a good source of protein for your pet. Also, the dehydration process imparts unique textures and flavors to the meat—no wonder most dogs love it! Just remember that the key to purchasing good jerky is to look at the ingredient list and label. As much as possible, it should be natural and minimally processed.

Dental Chews Keep Your Dog's Teeth Squeaky Clean

Dental Chews Keep Your Dog's Teeth Squeaky Clean

Some treats are designed to help clean your canine companion's teeth, such as dental chews. Aside from regularly brushing their teeth, it would be extremely beneficial to your beloved fur baby if you give them this kind of treat, as its unique shape can remove plaque. However, these treats should only be given once daily.

Dr. Randy Galutan
Senior Veterinary SurgeonDr. Randy Galutan

Dental treats for teething puppies are recommended, so they do not chew on other objects. They can also prevent the build-up of plaque and tartar.

However, sometimes these are just marketing strategies in selling treats, and I will still recommend regular brushing and regular vet visits for dental hygiene and check-up. Do not rely on dental treats alone, as some fur parents think they can leave their job to the dental treats. Nothing beats regular brushing and dental checks.

2

For Puppies and Senior Dogs, Choose Soft, Bite-Sized, and Nutrient-Rich Treats

Much like human food, there are age-appropriate snacks for dogs as well. To avoid indigestion and discomfort of any kind, check the label or the product description to see if it is suitable for the needs of your pet.

Small, Meaty Treats Are Best for Growing Tummies

Small, Meaty Treats Are Best for Growing Tummies

For puppies, it's best to give them small, meat-flavored treats to support their development. By giving them bite-sized chunks, your fur baby would not have a hard time eating the treats. If the treats you have are big, don't worry. Just break them into smaller pieces—problem solved!

Meaty treats are good for puppies because they are rich in protein. You can also use them as a reward while training your dog. But do give your pet a variety of choices to keep them engaged. They will love you for it!

Dr. Randy Galutan
Senior Veterinary SurgeonDr. Randy Galutan

Giving treats to puppies as a reward in teaching obedience has been established to be effective. However, choosing the kind of dog treat is a bit of a challenge. There are various treats available in the market today, and we have to be smart about which ones we use as a reward for good behavior and as a distraction for them to chew on.

Recommended treats should not cause any stomach upset or any gastro-intestinal disturbances that might lead to diarrhea or constipation. It should be aligned with the diet the puppy is taking. Consider the size of treats that you are giving as well - the last thing you want is to choke your precious puppy with a big piece of treat.

Get Easy to Chew, Antioxidant-Rich Treats for Senior Dogs

Get Easy to Chew, Antioxidant-Rich Treats for Senior Dogs

Elder dogs prefer treats that are easy to chew. Aside from that, consult your veterinarian if there are nutritional requirements you should consider when shopping for their food and treats. For instance, dogs of advanced age are susceptible to brain aging.

Select products that contain antioxidants to help your dog maintain their mental agility. Elder dogs are also prone to arthritis. As such, look for treats that contain collagen, fish oil, and glucosamine. These ingredients promote joint health and can help alleviate the pain caused by arthritis.

Dr. Randy Galutan
Senior Veterinary SurgeonDr. Randy Galutan

Treats for senior dogs are easier to find, as the pet owners already know what their senior dog prefers to eat. Commercial treats are always available in pet shops and even in vet clinics nowadays.  For senior dog treats, always check the label and steer clear of ingredients that you know your senior dog is allergic to

For owners that are new to giving treats, give them bit by bit. Choose a treat that can easily be broken and relatively easy to digest. Higher content of fish by-products is good for the overall well-being of senior dogs. It is also good for their coat, joints, and brain activity.

3

Get Treats That Are Made From High-Quality, Whole-Food Ingredients to Keep Your Dog Healthy

When checking the ingredients of dog treats, less is more! Go for ones that have fewer ingredients, paying special attention to products that are made from high-quality, whole-food ingredients. Natural dog treats supplement your dog's daily nutritional needs while keeping them satisfied. Know more about which ingredients to look for by scrolling down below!

Meat Keeps Your Pet Strong and Energized

Meat Keeps Your Pet Strong and Energized

Chicken, beef, and lamb are good sources of protein, especially for dogs. In particular, they contain omega fatty acids that have anti-inflammatory properties, which in turn, can improve your pet's skin and coat. Adding meat to their diet can nourish their joints and increase their energy as well.

Fruits and Vegetables Are Good for Digestion

Fruits and Vegetables Are Good for Digestion

Consider giving your pet healthy snacks. You may opt to give them fruits and veggies. Your pup might like banana slices, carrot sticks, cucumber, and cooked squash. These are rich in fiber and vitamins. Another option is to feed them fruit or vegetable-based treats, which are widely available in the market.

Dr. Randy Galutan
Senior Veterinary SurgeonDr. Randy Galutan

Fresh ripe papaya, apple, banana, as well as pears, carrots, boiled potatoes, and pumpkins are all good and healthy treats. You can also opt for raw dehydrated fruits and vegetables as treats (veterinary grade), and they are also available in the market.

Honey, Maple Syrup, or Applesauce Give the Treats That Extra Sweetness

Honey, Maple Syrup, or Applesauce Give the Treats That Extra Sweetness

If your dog has a sweet tooth, opt for treats that contain natural sweeteners such as honey, maple syrup, and applesauce. When given in small quantities, honey can relieve allergy symptoms and strengthen your pet's immunity

Like honey, maple syrup can also boost your pup's immune system. On the other hand, low-calorie applesauce can keep their nails and bones healthy, making it the best natural sweetener option for your fur baby.

4

Steer Clear of These Types of Food to Prevent Health Issues

Pet owners love spoiling their four-legged friends. When they see food, they instantly beg to have even just a bite. The longing in their eyes and the cute little dance that they do are almost too good to resist! However, their wishes must be denied every once in a while for their welfare. Read on if you would like to know more about the types of food that are dangerous for dogs.

Not All Human Food Can Be Eaten by Dogs

Not All Human Food Can Be Eaten by Dogs

Aside from pre-packaged treats, pet owners also love to give their furry friends human food as snacks. However, not all types of human food are suitable for dogs. You should never give chocolate, macadamia nuts, nutmeg, raisins, grapes, lemons, limes, coffee, tea, garlic, and onions to dogs as these can be toxic to them, especially in large amounts.

Xylitol, a sugar replacement often found in candy and pastry, is also bad for our canine companions. Avocado is another dangerous food for dogs. The fruit, together with the pit, bark, and leaves, contains a toxin known as persin. If a dog ingests any part of an avocado, they may experience breathing difficulties

If you drink alcohol, be careful not to leave open beer cans or vodka bottles lying around. If it spills and your pet drinks it without you knowing, it can potentially lead to ethanol poisoning. Anything with alcohol content such as cleaning products and perfumes is harmful to dogs.

Dr. Randy Galutan
Senior Veterinary SurgeonDr. Randy Galutan
Table food and leftover foods of humans are a big no for pets. It has been documented that most of the cases of stomach problems, allergies, diarrhea, and constipation are attributed to owners giving human foods to their pets.

Beware of Bones That Can Cause Tooth Fractures

Beware of Bones That Can Cause Tooth Fractures

Although dogs enjoy chewing on bones, it is not safe for them. Chewing on its hard surface can cause tooth fractures. Aside from this, splinters of the bone can also get stuck in your dog's mouth or throat. Incidents like this may require a trip to the vet.

As an alternative, you may give them treats that are shaped like bones. It mimics the feel of biting into bones, but they are soft enough to not harm your dog. You will know that it is safe to eat by checking if there are visible teeth marks once your pet bites into it.

Dr. Randy Galutan
Senior Veterinary SurgeonDr. Randy Galutan

Is giving bones to your pet good? This is just a myth. It is better to give the appropriate size of dehydrated rawhide for a teething puppy. I have seen a lot of cases of foreign body obstructions from feeding bones, and the scariest part is if there is already perforation in the inner linings of their stomach.

To Prevent Digestive Issues, Do Not Feed Your Dog Raw Meat

To Prevent Digestive Issues, Do Not Feed Your Dog Raw Meat

Dogs are known to be carnivores. However, it is not a good idea to give uncooked meat to your fur babies, because it might be contaminated with harmful bacteria like E. coli and Salmonella. The heat applied to meat during cooking lessens the risk of it being infected with these bacteria.

Dr. Randy Galutan
Senior Veterinary SurgeonDr. Randy Galutan

Raw meat is not generally recommended as we all know there are known potential pathogens in uncooked meat. Freezing and cooking will eliminate or kill the parasites, bacteria, and other microorganisms that thrive in raw meat. I have encountered a case of diarrhea due to the feeding of raw meat.

As a veterinarian, I recommend cooking meat before giving it to your dog. Our pets are now called domesticated - they are no longer born in the wild, where they used to resort to hunting for their meals.

Steer Clear of Dog Treats That Contain Fillers and Artificial Ingredients

Steer Clear of Dog Treats That Contain Fillers and Artificial Ingredients
To make them more appetizing for your pet, some manufacturers add artificial ingredients to dog treats. These include fillers, artificial colors and flavors, and preservatives, which do not have any nutritional value and can even be harmful when ingested in large amounts.

In particular, if you see Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA), Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT), ethoxyquin, potassium sorbate, sodium nitrate, calcium propionate, propylene glycol, and meat by-products on the label, it might be best to look for other options.

Avoid Starchy Treats to Prevent Indigestion and Weight Gain

Avoid Starchy Treats to Prevent Indigestion and Weight Gain

Though some dog treats are advertised as "grain-free" or "gluten-free," they may contain high amounts of starch, which can cause indigestion and weight gain. Instead, look for ones made from sweet potato or tapioca starch, which are easier to digest.

5

When Choosing Treats, Take Note of Your Dog's Diet and Allergies

When Choosing Treats, Take Note of Your Dog's Diet and Allergies

If your dog is on a special diet or is allergic to any food, it's important to pay close attention to the ingredients. For instance,  if your pet is trying to lose weight, avoid sugary treats or ones that have high-fat content. Or if your pup is allergic to wheat, soy, corn, or dairy products, ensure that the dog treats you're eyeing don't contain these ingredients.

Expert's Comment About the Top 10 Products

Dr. Randy Galutan
Senior Veterinary SurgeonDr. Randy Galutan

All fur parents want the best for their dogs. Choosing the correct treats is a must. Some clients I know bake their own treats specially made for their pets.

Not all treats are created equally, and we need to check the quality and nutritional components. Check for BAI approval and product registration if it's commercially available. Always check the ingredients, date of manufacturing, and expiration date. Always remember, no to human food.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some of the most asked questions on the web answered by the mybest team.

How Often Can I Give My Dog Treats?

As with everything, moderation is key! Giving your dog the right amount of treats can prevent stomach issues and weight gain. A rule of thumb is 10% of your pet's daily calorie intake, which is roughly equivalent to a large biscuit or a handful of small treats per day. However, this may still depend on your pup's current diet, so do consult your vet just to be sure.

Is It Possible to Train My Dog Without Treats?

Yes, it is possible to train your dog without treats! Depending on your fur baby's personality, you can reward them with toys, affection, praise, or playtime if you want to do away with treats. What's important is to establish a special bond with your pet so that you can train them easily.

Can Dog Treats Cause Diarrhea?

Sometimes, we cannot resist giving our fur babies lots of treats. However, if your pet consumes too many treats, this can cause stomach problems like diarrhea. It's important to keep track of the treats that you give your dog to prevent these issues.
