Breastmilk: Essential for Babies Up to 2 Years Old

Breastmilk is unmatched in providing essential nutrients and immune protection for babies up to two years old.

Breastmilk: Essential for Babies Up to 2 Years Old

While choosing a quality follow-on formula is important, pediatricians emphasize that breastmilk remains the best source of infant nutrition. It contains antibodies, enzymes, and hormones that formula cannot fully replicate, providing a layer of defense against common infections. For babies aged 6 to 12 months, continuing breastfeeding alongside solid foods ensures a smooth transition while maintaining optimal hydration and digestive health.

As your child grows into a toddler, the composition of breastmilk actually shifts to meet their changing developmental requirements. It serves as a concentrated source of energy and fat-soluble vitamins that support rapid brain growth and nervous system maturation.

Breastfeeding also strengthens the bond between mother and child, offering emotional comfort and security.

Situations Where Formula Milk Could Be an Alternative to Breastmilk

Formula milk can serve as a necessary alternative, ensuring that the baby continues to receive vital nutrients.

Situations Where Formula Milk Could Be an Alternative to Breastmilk

While breastmilk is ideal, several practical and medical factors may lead parents to explore infant formula options. Common situations where parents may choose to integrate formula include:

  • Low milk supply: When the mother cannot produce enough milk to meet the baby’s growing appetite
  • Returning to work: For parents who find it difficult to maintain a strict pumping schedule at the office
  • Medical considerations: When a mother is taking specific medications or has health conditions that make breastfeeding unsafe
  • Shared caregiving: To allow other family members to participate in feeding, ensuring the baby remains full and satisfied throughout the day

Modern formulas are designed to closely mimic the nutritional profile of breastmilk, including essential nutrients like iron, DHA, and ARA, which support your baby’s growth and development.

How to Choose Formula Milk for 6-12 Months - Buying Guide

Here’s a guide to help you evaluate nutritional labels and match specific ingredients to your baby's growth and digestive needs.

1

Choose Stage 2 Formula to Support Your Baby’s Growth and Nutrition

Dr. Martha Louise Tongco-Santiago
General Pediatrician
Dr. Martha Louise Tongco-Santiago

Selecting a formula that explicitly states it is for babies aged 6-12 months ensures it meets the specific nutritional needs of this age group.

Choose Stage 2 Formula to Support Your Baby’s Growth and Nutrition

Stage 2 or Follow-on formulas are specifically formulated to bridge the nutritional gap that opens up once a baby reaches six months. At this age, your baby’s natural stores of certain minerals begin to decrease, and a standard newborn formula may no longer provide the density of nutrients required for their increasing activity levels.

Formula milk is typically classified based on the age and developmental needs of babies:

  • Stage 1 (0-6 months): Infant formula
  • Stage 2 (6-12 months): Follow-on formula
  • Stage 3 (1-3 years): Toddler formula
  • Stage 4 (3 years and up): Growing-up milk
2

Pick the Right Formula Type for Your Baby’s Needs

Every baby has a unique tummy, so what works for your friend’s little one might not be the perfect fit for yours. It is helpful to observe how your baby reacts after a bottle to determine which formula type is best.

For Babies With Normal Digestion: Standard Cow’s Milk Formula

Dr. Martha Louise Tongco-Santiago
General Pediatrician
Dr. Martha Louise Tongco-Santiago

This closely mimics the nutritional profile of breast milk and provides the essential nutrients needed for your baby’s growth and development.

For Babies With Normal Digestion: Standard Cow’s Milk Formula

If your little one does not experience significant gas or tummy troubles, a standard cow’s milk formula is often the most straightforward and effective choice. These formulas are designed to be the closest structural match to natural milk, offering a familiar ratio of whey and casein.

Since these products are widely used, they often come with added enhancements like probiotics or DHA to further support your baby's physical milestones. By opting for a high-quality cow’s milk base, you are providing a reliable source of proteins and fats that are easy for a healthy digestive system to process.

For Babies With Frequent Gas or Fussiness: Hydrolyzed Formula

Dr. Martha Louise Tongco-Santiago
General Pediatrician
Dr. Martha Louise Tongco-Santiago

For babies with sensitive stomachs, hydrolyzed protein formulas are easier to digest and can help prevent discomfort, especially as they start trying new foods.

For Babies With Frequent Gas or Fussiness: Hydrolyzed Formula

It can be distressing to see your baby struggle with a bloated tummy or fuss after every feeding. If your baby is experiencing frequent burping and discomfort, a hydrolyzed formula may help. These specialized milk supplements break down proteins into smaller, easier-to-digest pieces, making the formula gentler on your baby’s stomach and supporting healthy growth without digestive strain.

Choosing a gentle formula helps smooth the transition during the weaning phase when new solids might already be challenging for their developing system. By choosing these easier-to-process proteins, you can significantly reduce common issues like colic or excessive gas.

For Babies With Confirmed Allergies: Hypoallergenic Formula

Dr. Martha Louise Tongco-Santiago
General Pediatrician
Dr. Martha Louise Tongco-Santiago

Hypoallergenic formulas, designed with extensively hydrolyzed proteins or amino acids, are suitable for babies with cow’s milk protein allergies or sensitivities.

For Babies With Confirmed Allergies: Hypoallergenic Formula

If your pediatrician confirms that your baby has Cow’s Milk Protein Allergy (CMPA), picking a hypoallergenic formula is essential for their health. These formulas undergo an intense filtration process where proteins are broken down so thoroughly that the immune system no longer recognizes them as a threat, preventing severe reactions like rashes, wheezing, or chronic diarrhea.

Giving your baby an extensively hydrolyzed or amino acid-based formula ensures they receive the calories and vitamins needed for development without the risk of an allergic flare-up. While the taste may differ from regular milk, most infants adapt quickly, especially during the 6-to-12-month stage.

For Babies With Lactose Intolerance: Soy Protein-Based or Lactose-Free Formula

Dr. Martha Louise Tongco-Santiago
General Pediatrician

Lactose-free formulas provide essential nutrients without causing digestive discomfort.

For Babies With Lactose Intolerance: Soy Protein-Based or Lactose-Free Formula

Finding the right balance for babies who react poorly to dairy can involve trial and error. If your little one frequently experiences watery stools after feeding, lactose-free or soy-based formulas may help. Lactose-free options remove natural milk sugar, while soy formulas use plant proteins to avoid dairy. Both are nutritionally complete, supporting healthy growth during the active 6-to-12 -month stage without added digestive stress.

These formulas are fortified with calcium and vitamin D to support bone development while easing digestion. They are especially useful for babies recovering from stomach infections, helping maintain hydration and energy without overworking a sensitive gut.

Check the Label for Essential Brain and Immune Support Nutrients

Dr. Martha Louise Tongco-Santiago
General Pediatrician

DHA, ARA, calcium, vitamins, and iron are essential for your baby’s brain, bone growth, and overall health, supporting proper development.

Check the Label for Essential Brain and Immune Support Nutrients

A formula enriched with specific functional ingredients acts like a fuel for their rapid physical and mental milestones. By prioritizing these key components, you can feel confident that your choice supports everything from their first crawls to their developing immune defenses.

Look for these boosters to help your little one reach their full potential:

  • DHA and ARA: Fatty acids vital for brain and eye development
  • 2'-FL HMO: A prebiotic that strengthens immunity and gut health
  • Calcium and vitamin D: Essential for building strong bones and healthy teeth
  • Iron and zinc: Minerals that prevent anemia and support overall growth
4

Select a Formula from a Reputable Brand

Dr. Martha Louise Tongco-Santiago
General Pediatrician
Dr. Martha Louise Tongco-Santiago

Choosing a formula from an established and reputable brand ensures that your baby receives safe and high-quality nutrition.

Select a Formula from a Reputable Brand

When shopping for formula, focus on well-established brands known for rigorous testing and safety protocols. These manufacturers invest in research to ensure every batch is consistent, giving you confidence that your baby receives the same high-quality nourishment in every bottle. Sticking with a reputable brand also reduces the risk of quality issues that could affect your baby’s sensitive digestive system.

It is also important to choose formulas with consistent stock in major Philippine retailers. Frequent brand switching can lead to tummy upset or feeding rejection, so choosing a formula that is always in stock helps maintain a stable diet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some of the most asked questions on the web answered by pediatrician Dr. Martha Louise Tongco-Santiago.

How Long Is Prepared Formula Milk Safe to Consume?

Prepared infant formula can spoil if left at room temperature. Any prepared infant formula should be consumed within 2 hours of preparation or within 1 hour from the start of feeding. If the prepared formula hasn’t been consumed within 2 hours, store it in the fridge and use it within 24 hours.

How Often Should I Feed My Baby?

Complementary feeding, or the introduction of solid foods, usually begins around 6 months. At this stage, breastfeeding or formula alone is no longer enough to meet a baby’s nutritional needs. Milk feeds are continued, typically five to six times in 24 hours, alongside three solid meals with snacks in between, adjusted to the baby’s age and appetite.

How Long Should a Child Be Breastfed?

Breastmilk is the best for babies up to 2 years old.
