When picking gifts for kids, think about what they like and their age. You also need to make sure the gift is safe and fun, and consider if it's both enjoyable and practical. Plus, checking product reviews can provide additional insights and help you make informed decisions. Find more tips in our buying guide below.
Whenever you're buying a gift for a child, a great place to start is to think about their interests. You want to make sure that you consider their hobbies, personalities, and favorites, whether it's a cartoon character, color, or animal.
For kids who like the arts or reading and writing, you can give them a journal, books, and paint kits. For those who enjoy watching television or listening to music, headphones or speakers make for great options. If you're planning to buy a gift for a baby or a toddler, you can get them toys or clothes.
However, if you're buying a present for a pamangkin or godchild that you don't see very often, you can ask their parents or guardians for advice. Doing this will also avoid giving them something they already have.
Gifts don't have to be expensive - as long as they match the child's interests and skill level and stimulate his imagination, the child will enjoy playing with them.
Another thing to consider when looking for a gift to buy is the child's age and maturity. You want to make sure that the present you’re getting them is something that they can enjoy and appreciate. And in the case of babies, something that would be a choking hazard.
Luckily, most products for kids, such as toys and clothes, have age recommendations on their packaging. You wouldn't want to give a toddler something complicated or too advanced for his age or a grade-schooler an item that is too simple that they'll lose interest immediately.
While the age appropriateness of a toy is generally a good guide, keep in mind the child's developmental level, too. For instance, a toy labeled as "Age 6 and up" might not be a good match if the 6-year-old (or older) has developmental delays. The same goes for gifted or advanced kids. It's always best to look at the "whole" child and think about his skill level as well.
We also recommend that you always check whether the product and its materials are free of harmful chemicals and toxins. Whether you're getting a toy, clothes, or any other items, you want to make sure that it is safe and appropriate for kids' use, especially if you are shopping for infants and toddlers.
Children are also naturally curious. They like to grab things and play with them, sometimes even place these objects in their mouths. Avoid giving presents with sharp edges and those that have BPA and lead. Go for products made with natural materials like organic cotton and bamboo.
Aside from those mentioned above, try to choose gifts with a long lifespan that are more sustainable. It can be tempting to go for the latest craze in toys, but these might be short-lived and end up just adding to clutter after a while.
Electronic toys are an example of the least sustainable toys, not just because of the large amount of energy used to manufacture them, but also because most of them rely on batteries or conk out easily and are difficult to recycle or donate.
Kids grow up fast, and since they're still learning about themselves, their interests and hobbies change often. That is why we suggest getting them gifts that are not only enjoyable but functional as well. Some examples of these products include activity tables, kid-sized seats, and chalkboards for studying at home.
You can also get them bikes or scooters to encourage them to learn new skills. Clothes like pajamas and personalized t-shirts also make for great options. We also recommend looking for products that they won't outgrow quickly, like nightlights, bags, or even a wallet for older kids.
Functional toys are great for supporting global development, especially problem-solving skills. They are useful for learning how to throw things, open and close objects, stacking, rolling, and so many more actions. This type of toy is also very useful in role-playing activities.

Below, Early Childhood Educator Och Gonzalez, answers some of the web's most asked questions, so before you hit that add-to-cart button, have a read to make sure you choose a good and thoughtful gift!
I am personally not a fan of gender-specific toys because they tend to box in children and lead to stereotypical thinking. Kids should have access to gender-neutral toys and activities to realize their full potential and to arrive at their own preferences. Research has also shown that gender-neutral toys encourage more experimentation and remove limitations in terms of what children can do and become.
Cash gifts aren't necessarily better or worse than toys - it depends on the child and their ability to understand the value of the gift. Having said that, cash gifts are useful for teaching kids about money and financial literacy. They can start saving in a piggy bank or a real bank or choose to spend it on what they want.
Either way, they will learn the lesson you want to teach them, which is how to be responsible with money. You can also opt to give a non-cash financial gift like a treasury bond or stock certificate, although this would be more appropriate for older kids who have the capacity to understand what this means.
It depends on the child. Children learn at different paces, and it's always wise to take this into account when choosing a gift. Not only will the child be able to use it more, but you'll also convey that you see him and "get" him and understand what he's capable of.
