10 Best Slice of Life Anime in the Philippines 2022 | Violet Evergarden, Mob Psycho 100, Kiki's Delivery Service, and More

Binge-watching movies and series have been a go-to hobby during the quarantine. From K-dramas to movie trilogies, they all keep our sanity intact from the uncertainties of real-world problems, even just for several hours. Of course, we will never miss out on watching anime, and they are not new to us since Voltes V is one of the well-loved animes during the 1970s.

You might be familiar with the classic action meets fantasy anime like Dragon Ball, Sailormoon, and Ghost Fighter. But they come in various genres and themes that we could all relate to, including slice of life anime such as Lucky Star and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. In this article, we'll highlight some of the best slice of life anime you can watch online.

What Is a Slice of Life Anime?

What Is a Slice of Life Anime?

Slice of life anime generally follows the daily lives of the main characters. Most of the time, there is no single conflict that challenges the story's characters and has a non-linear story progress. Each episode showcases a different storyline, and the characters always resolve issues at the end of every episode.

If you can't grasp what a slice of life anime is, always remember Doraemon! Doraemon is an excellent example of a slice of life anime since the story follows the protagonist, Nobita, on his daily struggles as a kid with his robot best friend, Doraemon. As the episode ends, they always find a way to solve problems.

Slice of life anime is a very relaxed anime to watch, perfect if you want to sit back and let loose once in a while. However, as previously mentioned, if you'd like to see some character development, few shows offer an overarching story. Hence, it can rarely be seen in this genre.

How to Choose a Slice of Life Anime - Viewer's Guide

Now that you have a clear idea of what a slice of life anime is, let us move on to the things to look for when you want to binge-watch shows from this genre. We have listed some things to be mindful of when selecting a slice of life anime or even other anime genres.

1

Choose Between a Series or a Movie

Choose Between a Series or a Movie

There is plenty of good anime, whether as a full-length movie, a short film, or a TV series. The decision boils down to how much time you're willing to allot in watching anime, say if you have a free day or if you're busy with work or school.

Also, another thing to consider when watching an anime series or movie is that each person has a different attention span. An anime series spans about 12 episodes per season, while you can finish a film in just one sitting unless you are into sequels and prequels.

2

Consider the Estimated Running Time

Consider the Estimated Running Time

As we've mentioned before, not all of us can watch a whole series of anime or even finish an entire movie in one sitting. An anime film usually lasts a little over an hour. Still, there may be movies with several installments that you want to complete at once, so remember to keep this into account before pressing the Play button.

For anime series, one season usually consists of approximately 12 episodes with 25 minutes of running time per episode, which is about 4.8 hours per season. Not to mention, popular anime tend to have multiple seasons. So, we recommend short series if you don't have sufficient time and save the longer ones for your free time or day off.

Again, the choice will really depend on you. But the great thing with streaming platforms is that they allow you to pause the movies or series anytime. You can always go back or replay the parts or episodes you have missed, as long as your account is still active.

3

Search for the Synopsis or Plot to Check the Theme and Age Rating

Search for the Synopsis or Plot to Check the Theme and Age Rating

Searching and reading the synopsis of the show can be helpful to understand the overall story of the series. You can also manage your expectations on what is to come as the series moves forward. We recommend reading the synopsis first to have a gist of the story without spoiling yourself.

Also, you can check the age rating of the show alongside the synopsis. Do note that even if anime is presented in cartoon format, not all of them are child-friendly. It is necessary to examine the rating to determine the target demographic of the anime or movie. For instance, some scenes in anime are a tad bit extreme for young viewers.

If there are children watching with you, look for shows with a "little kids" (all ages to 7+) rating. It is similar to the "rated G" or general patronage of the Movie and Television Regulatory and Classification Board (MTRCB). To know which rating system your chosen streaming service employs, try searching on their website or on online forums.

4

Consider the Side Genre

Consider the Side Genre

Since the slice of life genre talks little about character development, expect it to be intertwined with other genres for a complete viewing experience. Fantasy and comedy are feel-good and light-hearted anime that many people prefer watching as a pastime. These genres are mostly non-linear and have no overarching storyline.

On the other hand, drama or mystery slice-of-life anime require more of your attention compared to other genres. It is because they have some character development in them and tiny details you might miss when you blink.

Others have a wonderful mix of these genres. If you want a show that is very easy to watch, go for much simpler subgenres. But if you crave good storytelling, then go for more complex subgenres.

5

Support Trusted Streaming Sites and Say No to Piracy

Support Trusted Streaming Sites and Say No to Piracy

Piracy in the Philippines is not a new thing, but it does not justify pirating an anime - or any movie or series for that matter. Piracy is still illegal, and you can pay a hefty fine or even face jail time if you are caught illegally downloading anime online.

Save yourself from committing a crime and support the hardworking people behind the production because anime serves as their bread-and-butter and an avenue to hone their talents. Plus, watching your favorite anime legally would increase the chance of having new seasons or films.

We highly suggest getting a paid subscription to watch movies or series in streaming services such as Netflix and YouTube channels since they have valid licenses from the creators themselves. They are the most secure way to watch your favorite anime and guarantee a wide variety of shows.

A Heartfelt Anime Dealing With Hurting and Healing

This anime executes a realistic picture of the struggles and triumphs of those suffering from the loss of loved ones. With its heartfelt plot, beautiful animation, and incredible soundtrack, people will better understand dealing with trauma and depression, most especially death, war aftermath, and other poignant topics.

The story revolves around a female soldier named Violet who survived and recovered from the violence of the Great War. When she left the military, she worked as an auto-memory doll, transcribing people's thoughts and feelings. This job led her to an adventure to reshape her clients' lives and, at the same time, propelled her towards self-discovery.

Overall, the audience will definitely find the anime series relatable - a slice of life indeed! The characters are very interesting, and the storyline is very engaging. We highly recommend that you watch this series at least once, and we won't be surprised if you will re-watch it several times.

Kyoto AnimationA Silent Voice2016

Talks About Bullying, Forgiveness, and Second Chances

Prepare your tissues because this one is a tearjerker! A Silent Voice tackles the issues of bullying, suicide, and depression, a very timely and relevant topic nowadays. But worry not, as you will be rewarded at the end of the film because of its redeeming value about forgiveness and second chances.

The film is about Ishida, who is being haunted by his past mistakes, bullying his deaf elementary classmate, Nishimiya. As each day passed, the guilt and depression slowly creep into his mind. So, he sought forgiveness from Nishimiya and make amends when they crossed their paths during their third year in high school.

The topic of this movie is quite sensitive yet heartwarming. Despite a few minor plot holes and one-sided supporting characters, it is still an outstanding anime movie to watch overall.

No.3

Production I.GUsagi Drop2011

A Heart-Warming Story of Acceptance and Love for the Family

The story of Usagi Drop (Bunny Drop) is both heart-warming and comforting. If you are a single parent or a breadwinner supporting younger family members, this is the anime that will tug at your heartstrings! We highly recommend it for those who are into light-hearted stories.

The plot is about a Daikichi, a single professional in his thirties, adopting his grandfather's young illegitimate child, Rin. He willfully and lovingly took all the responsibilities in raising a child, despite having no prior experience of parenting and the cold treatment to Rin by his relatives.

This anime explores the ups and downs of parenting and the joys and challenges of adjusting to a new lifestyle. With the beautiful dynamics of the main characters, you will finish the series with a smile on your face.

No.4

BonesMob Psycho 1002016

Just a Young Kid Who Wants to Live a Normal Life

From the same creator of One Punch Man, Mob Psycho has a similar premise, storytelling style, and brand of humor. This anime is one of the best examples of a slice of life anime with a bit of action on the side - it's indeed worth watching!

The plot revolves around Mob, who, despite having tremendous psychic abilities, wants to live an ordinary life instead of aiming to be the greatest hero. When emotions get the best of him, he loses control and obliterates anyone or anything that stands in his way.

This slice of life anime has the perfect combination of spectacular action scenes, witty comedy, and a good soundtrack. There are currently two seasons, and the third one is coming in 2022. But if you're itching to know what happens in the end, read its complete manga version.

J.C.StaffKonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World2016

The Perfect Blend of Slice of Life and Fantasy-Themed Series

Looking for an anime to binge-watching with your friends? KonoSuba is the perfect one for that! It is a novel-based, slice of life genre, with 24 episodes in 2 seasons. It explores the life of Kazuma, who died horribly and received a second life in a fantasy game-like world, with a mission to end the Demon King's tyranny while encountering interesting characters along the way.

This plot is very laid back and stayed true to the book. It highlights unconventional storytelling integrating pop culture references and some witty dialogues from the characters. Each episode is relatively short and easy to grasp, along with the seamless transition between adventure and the slice-of-life genre.

No.6

A-1 PicturesKaguya-sama: Love is War2019

A Battle of Minds and Wits for Love

If you are into love stories and intellectual showdowns, you should add Love Is War to your anime playlist! It revolves around two brilliant student council officers who are secretly in love with each other, but both believe that confession is a weakness.

Hence, they engage in a battle of wit to get the other person to admit their feelings. With light-hearted scenes and great visual design, it is a certified feel-good series sans the heavy drama.

Despite the genius characters, there are no mind-boggling and highfalutin concepts to decipher and do not follow the traditional kilig plot. Invite your witty friends to watch it with you and see them giggle in delight!

No.7

CoMix Wave FilmsGarden of Words2013

An Underrated Shinkai Film About Love and Rainshowers

If you've watched the film Your Name, then Garden of Words might pique your interest because both are created by the same fantastic director, Makoto Shinkai. It is about a high school student and aspiring shoemaker who skips classes during rainy days to go to a park.

There, he meets a lonely woman who is trying to navigate her way in life. Slowly, the two form a bond, and he develops romantic feelings for this mysterious person. It is one of the earliest and shortest works of Makoto Shinkai. With a 45-minute run time, you can easily watch it during your break or leisure time.

The story is relatively engaging and resembles a chick flick, so it can be a bit cheesy at times. Conversely, the graphics and cinematography do not disappoint. If you want to experience a great standard slice of life film, be sure to check it out.

No.8

Studio GhibliKiki's Delivery Service1989

A Story of Failure, Courage, and Success for the Whole Family to Watch

A heartwarming movie with a touch of magic, Kiki's Delivery Service is a family-friendly anime worth watching. It is about a young witch who is resourceful, confident, and imaginative. Alongside her travel, a talking black cat keeps her company. Kiki ends up staying in a small town and helping the people in the community.

This anime teaches us that failures and imperfections are stepping stones to success if we won't give up. It is a film about accepting each others' flaws and, at the same time, changing for the better. It is very light-hearted and easy to watch, but for a slice of life movie, it is packed with life lessons, ideal for the younger generation.

No.9

FanworksAggressive Retsuko2016

Release Your Work Stress With This Relatable Overworked Employee

Aggrestsuko is seemingly a kid-friendly anime, but actually, it is a satirical show of employees' struggles. In the series, Retsuko is a red panda personifying a clerk, enduring workplace issues - a misogynistic boss and co-workers who bully her. To poke fun, she vents out by screaming in her head, accompanied by heavy metal music.

This anime is a stress-buster and is relatable in many ways. Each episode is not dragging because it runs for 15 to 20 minutes only. You can easily understand the simple plot - no overarching storylines here. Watch this funny slice of life anime with your work friends, and this is gonna be a laugh trip with a pinch of reality.
