Lip tints, lipsticks, and lip glosses are all cosmetic products designed to put some pigment on the lips. A lip tint or a lip stain is a dye formulated to stain the lips for a long time. It is mainly a water-based lip product that leaves the color on the lips when dried. It can also contain alcohol or other similar ingredients for a faster drying time.
Meanwhile, lipsticks are the more traditional way to color the lips. They contain waxes, oils, pigments, and certain emollients. All these ingredients work in giving the lips a vibrant hue while keeping them soft and moisturized. On the other hand, lip gloss is usually layered on top of lipstick to give the lips some shine. It's moisturizing and makes the lips look fuller and juicier.
Lip tints are more of a sheer, watercolor-like wash of colors that can be used on the lips, cheeks, and sometimes on the eyes. Lipsticks have more pigment and emollients which can have various finishes like matte, satin and can sometimes be in a liquid form. Glosses are toppers that add shine to make lips look hydrated, plump, and juicy.

Lip tints or stains are known for their lasting power. No matter which formula you choose, lip tints are sure to stay on your lips the whole day. Let's find out how the formulas differ.
Liquid-type lip tints are the most popular, and most brands will have one item with a liquid formula. Some are more watery, while others have a gel-like consistency. Keep in mind that the more watery lip tints won't give as much coverage as lip tints with thicker consistencies.
Lip tints with a liquid-type formula usually have a doe-foot applicator, a roll-on tip, or a squeeze tube. This type of formula doesn't usually have moisturizing ingredients in it. The primary purpose is to give your lips a color that is basically tattooed on your lips for the entire day.
There are new formulas that are a hybrid of cream and liquid that provides more coverage rather than a sheer wash of color. Most often than not, they also contain ingredients that keep lips from drying out.
Matte lip tints have the lasting power of lip tints coupled with the coverage of a matte lipstick. Like a typical lip tint, these usually feel lightweight, like you're wearing nothing at all. They provide the look of a matte lipstick without the heavy feeling or the cracking and creasing.
Some of my faves are lip tints from Korean brands that look powdery, blurred, and velvety while feeling very light in mousse formulas!
Lip tints that are packaged in sticks look like a regular lipstick or a lip balm. However, when applied, they are sheer and lightweight, and perform similarly to the other types of lip tints. The main difference is that tint sticks are creamy and have more moisturizing ingredients that make the lips look softer and fuller.
Tint sticks are the easiest to work with, convenient, and make the lips look healthy and hydrated. It's also the most comfortable to wear!
Peel-off lip tints probably have the longest lasting power among all the lip tint formulas. You first apply a thick coating of the product on your lips, leave it on for at least 10 minutes, then peel it off when it's dry.
The color pigments absorb into the lips, resulting in a vibrant color that looks natural and juicy – not dry at all. For best results, exfoliate your lips before applying a peel-off lip tint and remember to use a lip balm throughout the day to keep your lips plump and hydrated.
Peel-off lip tints are an interesting concept, but it may be hard to find this type locally!
Lip tints have the edge over lipsticks in terms of staying power because of their more fluid consistency. That said, not all lip tints are created equal. Water-based lip tints tend to last longer than oil-based ones. However, oil-based lip tints do offer a more moisturizing effect. If you go for water-based lip tints and need more moisture, simply apply lip balm afterwards.
One hack that you can do to make the lip tint last longer is to leave on a balm or lip mask for a couple of minutes, blot and remove any moisture with a tissue, then proceed with the lip tint application.
We all know you can rock any lip tint color because you're stunning and beautiful. But the best lip color for you is the one that will complement the undertone of your skin or one that is close to your natural lip color.
You can find out your skin's undertones just by looking at the veins in your arms. If your veins have a bluish hue, you're cool-toned. This type is usually lighter in color and is more likely to burn than tan under the sun.
If your skin has cool undertones, complement it with cool-toned lip tints like pinks and purples. Blue-toned reds also work well with this type of undertone. Go for berry shades like plum and cranberry or a bright cherry shade that leans more towards blue than orange.
Cool-toned colors can also make teeth appear whiter and can brighten dull complexions.
If you tan easily even for just a short time under the sun, most likely, you have a warm undertone to your skin. The veins in your arms also appear green. People with warm undertones usually have a yellow, golden, or olive hue to their skin. If you have warm undertones, the best colors for you would be orange, orangey-reds, and reddish-browns.
One thing to take note of when using warm-toned lip tints is that they tend to make the teeth appear yellowish. That is why cool-toned colors are often recommended.
Neutral skin undertones are in between the skin tone spectrum. If you have a mix of pink and yellow in the base of your skin, you are truly lucky because your undertone works with a wide range of shades. You can try mauve and pink hues or deep berry shades, and you'll look fabulous either way!
Lip tints with neutral tones are the safest bet if it's confusing for you to find out your own undertone.
For added convenience, use one product for both your lips and cheeks. Not only is this more budget-friendly, but more importantly, you get a lovely, naturally flushed look. It will even match the color of your lips. Use a lip tint all over your cheeks to achieve that sun-kissed look that's popular with younger Filipino celebrities.
Many products in the Philippine market nowadays are multi-use, especially locally manufactured ones. Not only can these tints be used on the eyes, but they can also be used for the eyes and cheeks too. The monochromatic look is trendy at the moment since it looks cohesive and polished for a quick look before online video calls.
We all have our own preferred ways of applying makeup, and some types of packaging and applicators may appeal more to us than others in terms of convenience and ease of use. Here are the most common types of applicators used in lip tints.
The most common type of applicator you'll see in lip tints is the doe-foot applicator. This has a slanted angle that follows the natural contours of your lips and makes application easy. It also keeps your fingers stain-free, since the applicator works well enough to distribute the tint accurately and evenly.
This is the most common applicator. They are convenient, but they may not be as sanitary as other applicators. I wouldn't recommend sharing lip tints with doe-foot applicators with other people.
Squeeze tubes work exactly as the name indicates. You simply squeeze the tube until the product comes out, and then you can use your fingers and dab the tint on your lips to distribute it evenly. Since the lip tint comes out of a tiny hole at the tip, this type of applicator keeps the remaining product inside the tube safe from contamination, leading to a longer shelf life.
If you want to keep the lip tint more sanitary, you can also use a lip brush to apply the product to your lips!
Rollerballs work well for lip tints because of their watery consistency. The ball on top of the bottle may be made of plastic, glass, or stainless steel, but whatever the material, it works by gliding smoothly in a rolling motion to get the product out.
This is the easiest "delivery vehicle," but you still need your fingers or another tool to blend the color like a sponge or a brush (if used on cheeks).
Colourette Cosmetics is a proudly Filipina-owned brand that specializes in multipurpose makeup, which will make you look good and feel good. This multi-use tint is part of their amazing line-up of products. It's highly pigmented, so you can use it on your lips, cheeks, and eyes for a beautiful pop of color no matter the occasion.
Its doe-foot applicator makes it easy for you to apply product wherever you are, making this lip tint very travel-friendly for girl bosses on the go! Plus, it leaves behind a smooth matte finish that'll look great all day. This lip tint is also moisturizing and safe for sensitive skin since it's infused with argan oil and has a sulfate-free and silicone-free formula.
One of the striking things about this lip tint is its unique formula. When first applied on the lips, this lip tint appears glossy before settling down to a vibrant hydrating tint that will stay on your lips for hours. It will make your lips look and feel juicy with its oil-in-water formula that is nourishing and lightweight.
It comes in various flattering shades that will make your lips and skin look naturally flushed when applied to your cheeks. It's no surprise why hundreds of users praise this product, saying that it feels super soft on the skin and that it's not sticky when applied. One customer also said that the shades are bagay for morenas.
This lip tint is enhanced to be extra pigmented, light on the lips, and easy to blend for you to create quick looks on the go. It has a hybrid water gel formula that will keep your lips hydrated and make them pop. It comes in eight shades of bright red, perfect for that fresh look every day.
It's infused with vitamin E and is paraben-free, cruelty-free, and vegan, so it's bound to be good for your skin. It's no surprise that many users have left it high ratings, saying that it's magaan on their lips and that it's easy to build pigment. They also said that it doesn't irritate their lips.
Below are some of the most asked questions on the web answered by Elaine Ganuelas!
To make your lip tint last longer, you may follow these suggestions. First, make sure that your lips are free of moisture. You may skip lip primer since it will only make your lip more emollient. Dust your lips slightly with powder. Apply the tint on the center, then blend and diffuse with your finger or with a brush. Lastly, dust with loose powder to finish off. Taking the time to do these steps ensures that your gorgeous lip color lasts longer!
This is a common misconception, but the truth is, unless you're allergic or sensitive to the ingredients in your lip tint, it's very unlikely that it will darken your lips in the long run. It's also important to use products from reputable brands because those have gone through rigorous testing and certifications to ensure quality and safety for the user.
If you do have darkened lips, it may be because some pigments were left on the lips, and they were not removed with the right lip makeup remover. Oil or balm cleansers are great for this job, and regular exfoliation can help remove those pigments or stains left.
Clumping or caking typically happens when your lips are dry or have dead skin on top. The easiest way to get rid of this is to exfoliate. As mentioned earlier, a gentle scrub does wonders in brushing away those nasty flakes and turning your puckers smooth.
It's important to maintain proper lip care even when you're not wearing your lip tint. You can do this by applying lip balm or lip oil. Also, don't try to peel off dry flakes no matter how tempting, as it can cause the lips to have uneven patches.
Here are some lip tints that Elaine recommends and why she recommends them!
This popular Korean tint has a cult following among women, whether a true blue beauty addict or not. Apart from being an affordable option, there is a huge range of colors to choose from—from warm to neutral to cool base!
It's cloudy, lightweight, and stains the lips lightly. It doesn't leave the lips dry and flaky, unlike most tints do. This is also perfect for that gradient lip look that we see nowadays.
With a couple of flattering shades that cater to mestizas to morenas, the color range of these paints looks great no matter what your skin tone is. Most of the shades can work across all skin colors. Its creamy liquid formula can even stand mask-wearing days! These babies are also multi-use, so it's great for eyes, lips, and cheeks
If it's lip tints, then it has to be Benetint! Most of us know and love this! The sheer and cheerful red is a classic, and it brightens up the face with or without base makeup. At this date and time, they have already released other shades, like pinks, corals, etc., that are equally gorgeous and could work well with most skin tones.
Enhance your gorgeous features with makeup that looks natural and effortless. Check out these products below to achieve the best everyday looks!
