Our skin is in contact with bacteria, dirt, oils, and many more on a daily basis. Clay masks work like a sponge or magnet that attracts and pulls all the impurities and gunk out of your skin, unclogging the pores and leaving you with clean, clear, and healthy skin! It works for all skin types, but it's most beneficial for those with acne-prone and oily skin.
Clay is a soft, loose material with minerals. It is absorbent, which is why it is used in skincare to remove impurities. Clay masks are composed of different materials and have a high aluminate and silicate content.
Clay masks are known to have minerals rich in anti-microbial properties that detoxify pores to fight future breakouts and also help control existing acne. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, so it helps soothe and calm skin inflammation and irritation. Additionally, some people who have eczema find applying a clay mask or putting clay powder in their bath beneficial for their skin.
Clay masks can control oil production that is a factor in acne formation. With its use, it can help control acne breakout. Remember though that you still need acne treatment to address the underlying factors for its formation
If your skin is looking tired or dull, using a clay mask can help bring blood and oxygen up to the skin surface, which promotes and boosts circulation. This has an impact on skin rejuvenation, plus it boosts collagen production and accelerates healing, leading to bright and healthy skin.
The main effect of clay facial masks, in a short-term application, comes from the hardening of the product after the evaporation of water.
It also forms a film on the skin’s surface which reduces the loss of the skin’s water content, promoting hydration. With an increase in hydration, the skin looks plumped and rejuvenated. But note that this effect is temporary only.
Here are some key points to consider:

Whether you have dry, oily, combination, sensitive, or acne-prone skin, each type of clay mask caters to different skin-type and there is definitely one for you.
Bentonite clay comes from aged volcanic ash rich in minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, and many more. It is considered the most effective healing clay because it does not just remove excess oil, but it also purifies the skin by removing toxins and impurities that clog pores.
When hydrated, electrical and molecular components of the clay change, producing an electrical charge that makes it highly absorbent, drawing out toxins, perfect for very oily and acne-prone skin types.
Like Bentonite clay, French Green clay also has terrific absorbent properties. It pulls out toxins, tightens pores, and enhances complexion by drawing blood to the surface and providing healthy-looking and brighter skin. French Green Clay also has anti-inflammatory properties that help soothe and calm irritated skin.
The term bentonite is used for any colloidal, swelling clay that is made of minerals of the smectite group (montmorillonite, saponite, or hectorite). It can have several colors (white, yellow, brown, green, pink, red, or black), according to the ions in the smectite structures and according to the associated minerals existing, both related to their origin. Bentonite masks (usually green in color) are recommended for oily skin.
Also known as white clay, this type of clay originated from Gaoling, China, and is used to make porcelain and paper, and treat digestive problems as well. The whiter the color of the clay, the purer it is. However, color may vary from white to dark brown depending on where it is mined and the mineral deposits it contains.
White clay has kaolinite, a type of mineral that acts as a mild and gentle skin exfoliator. Among all the clay types, kaolin has the lowest pH level and the least absorbent. As a result, it can remove excess sebum without stripping off natural oils and moisture from the skin, making it perfect for a wide range of skin types, even dry and sensitive skin.
Kaolin (also called ‘China clay’) is soft clay. Kaolinite is the most common mineral, so kaolin and kaolinite are therefore frequently confused as synonymous terms. Kaolins are usually white but may be light brown, cream, yellow, red, or gray. They are less absorbent than bentonite, so kaolin-based masks (usually white or pink in color) are generally better for dry and sensitive skin.
Rich in aluminum magnesium silicate, this type of clay can be found in different herbal and cosmetic products because of its health benefits. Like other clays, fuller’s earth clay also has oil-absorbing properties and it minimizes the appearance of pores. What makes it unique among other clays is that it has mild bleaching properties that help address hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone.
Fuller’s earth clay comes from volcanic ash sediments and is a great oil absorber. It is said to have exfoliating effects. This facial clay contains mild lightening properties and can be used as an add-on to lighten dark spots. Because of its strong absorbing properties, it is best for people with oily skin, as it can be drying for other skin types.
Aside from checking which type of clay is the main ingredient, most clay masks contain other ingredients for added benefits. Depending on your skin concern, look for ingredients like tea tree, rose water, aloe vera to treat acne, chamomile to soothe irritation, grounds oats to exfoliate, essential oils to hydrate, and many more.
There are different types of clay masks for each skin type. Hence, it is important to check the ingredients included in the clay mask. For instance, if you have dry skin, look for hydrating ingredients such as glycerin and sodium hyaluronate.
Powder type will give you more control over how much product you need, and it will also allow you to play around and customize it. You can just mix it with water or add different ingredients according to your liking and depending on what you know works best for your skin.
Sheet and clay masks that come in tubs or pots are more convenient. In addition, sheet masks are less messy and could offer a deeper detox and penetration of the product on the skin.
Cream-type clay masks that come in tubs, pots, tubes, or even resealable pouches just need to be lathered on the skin as is. Unlike sheet masks, cream type and powder type can be used to "multimask", meaning different products can be used at once, per area and skin concern.
A cream-based mask can be beneficial to dry skin type and mature skin. Sheet masks are said to be more hydrating since it is infused with serum. However, the single-use type of sheet mask is not practical. The amount of serum infused in the sheet mask can be wasted because way too much of the serum is put. Opt for a reusable silicone type of sheet mask instead. It can enhance product penetration more and will not be wasted because it can be reused.

Can't wait to try a clay mask? Before you apply it to your face, read on below for more information. We asked Dr. Jarische Lao-Ang some of the most asked questions online, and here are her answers!
Clay mask is recommended to be done 1 to 2 times a week. If done too often, it may strip off natural oils of the skin, leading to a damaged skin barrier.
The amount of clay mask must be just enough to cover the whole face. Just avoid applying too near the eyes since it may get inside and cause irritation.
In a personal opinion, it is best to avoid putting on a clay mask if you have enlarged and inflamed acne because the stripping of the clay may pop a pimple. When a pimple is not properly popped, an acne scar may form. However, if your acne is mild & controlled (comedonal type), a clay mask can be used to control the breakout.
You can apply a clay mask with your fingers or a brush. Wait for 5 to 30 minutes, depending on your skin’s tolerance, then wash off. Use lukewarm water to help remove the hardened clay on your face.
There's no need to wait for the clay mask to dry before removing it to avoid irritation. After washing off the clay mask, you may put on a moisturizer. Avoid putting on your actives first because there is a risk of irritation.
